I’m sure the older generation Koreans probably still harbor resentment. But the younger generation doesn’t seem to care about those things.
Hyundai went through three purposeful iterations.
The first cars were Yugo or Treblant quality
Ten years later, they were on more reliable than the typical American car, and not far behind the Japanese.
Now Hyundai and its new Genesis line are top of the world class.
They are smart, dedicated, committed.... and they learn.
It’s easy to forget that until the 1960s, South Korea was still considered to be economically behind the North, as North Korea hadn’t gone entirely bats—t crazy at that time, it was more like a traditional Communist country, not exactly prosperous, but certainly the average North Korean then was much better off than they are today.
And immediately hired at CNN at their Miami bureau, and he is now back at NBC!!!
Between that and the tae kwan do, I wouldn’t want to piss ‘em off either! ;)
1/2 of his comments were somewhat factually correct, as mere fact without getting into the political ramifications of it; that would be:
“the Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula was an important moment in South Korea’s economic transformation”
Which it was. Along with that occupation came the first stages of industrialization on the Korean peninsula, which the Korean Kingdom had not then yet begun, when the occupation began. Of course the industrialization was to benefit Imperial Japan, it is also true that Koreans began to benefit from the process - whether or not they liked that it was being run by Japan.
The 1/2 where he was wrong was in the idea that Koreans see Japan as any cultural model.
As far as economic models, it is an “East Asian” mercantilist nationalist model that is embraced by China, Korea and Japan.
What did he say? Dog, eat dog?
re: former colonies. When you look at how far Kenya and the other 4 former British East African colonies are advanced beyond West Africa, that politically incorrect truth is very evident.
OK, thanks for the info, I did not know that.
had been hired temporarily by NBC to bring historical context to its coverage.
Imperial Japan tried to do basically what China is trying to do today, dominate Asia and create a “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere”.
You have never known any Koreans.
Even South Africa is still miles ahead of the rest of the continent, so much so that they are having big-time problems with refugees from the rest of the continent invading the country.
We in America can hardly imagine what it is like to be occupied by a tyrannical empire. We measure our social cues by hours. Why hold a grudge for forty years? Our media people need to read a book once in a while.
NBC should hire you to replace Ramo.
I know some. And while they don’t necessarily consider Japanese to be their bestest buddies, they don’t hate them neither.
They did plenty to the women.
LOL, maybe Tony Romo would do a better job.
Tell that to the BLM types who still dwell on what happened over 150 years ago.
