Logic has nothing to do with it. You could say that it was the grandfathers of the people in Japan who caused the war, not those that are there now.

There is a perfect reason to not take a offense. But these people choose not to listen to reason. They choose to be offended. So, I choose to be offended by their eating dog.

“had been hired temporarily by NBC to bring historical context to its coverage”

Historical context? Stupid idea to begin with. Costas, etc, NBC will never learn the KISS lesson (Keep It Sports Stupid) with their coverage.

One story I heard as walking by the TV:

Jay-Z saying that Trayvon was African/American-Hispanic.

news to me.

I thought he was black.

Anyone know different?

I’m thinking that too...but he still should have been more careful to distinguish between the two. But then if he was too careful, such as mentioning what Japan did during the war...Japan would have been angry, saying the Olympics is no place for that...so no easy way to discuss it.

...except to not discuss it at all, which he should have known.

For what it’s worth. When I was in Korea in the 1950s, the ROK captain I worked with told me he had to learn Korean after liberation. I was in a newsroom with Korean reporters after hour when they played the reverse side of a tape made in Tokyo in Korean to be air on a Korean language station. The back side of the tape was loaded with traditional Japanese music. They shut the windows, pulled down the blinds and begin dancing traditional Japanese dances. They had all been educated in Japanese. In the coffee shop I frequented, there was a sign in Korea that it was against the law to speak the “dwarf” language.

All he said is that Korea looked to what Japan did after WWII as an example to grow their economy.

I'm sure that's what he meant. I was in consumer electronics all my working life what he said is true.

Remember when "Made In Japan" meant shoddy junk? Then they knuckled down and Sony (and others) made such quality products that you looked to see if they were actually "Made In Japan" instead of somewhere the quality wasn't so good....such as Korea.

Well around 1997 or so I was working at HiFi Buys in Atlanta and we received a VCR line from Korea that was actually built well and cheaper than the JVCs and Panasonics that were our best sellers.. It was a little brand nobody had heard of...Samsung. That was followed by one almost as good, Goldstar. (That came from their Korean name, Lucky Goldstar. You know them today as LG)

They followed the Japanese example so well, that today (and unbelievable to an old A/V guy like me) Samsung and LG are leading the charts and Sony is now just another "Me Too" product.

No, it’s not.

I know a specific example involving the local Korean community whose actions caused a response at the highest levels from the Japanese foreign ministry. The controversy was over a reminder of Japan’s occupation of Korea in WWII.

There are plenty with long memories.

They are still a step back. The next generation, coming in 2019, I expect will be at that tier.

The current gen is a bit of a pig, which holds it back.

Under the Japanese, North Korea was industrialized in conjunction with Manchukuo, while South Korea was kept agricultural.

When ABC had the games, Peter Jennings would have some interesting facts about each country in the parade of nations....Bryant Gumbel couldn’t seem to duplicate that, and Bob Costas couldn’t resist making stupid jokes. It looks like NBC tried to contract it out, and still couldn’t get it right.

The Koreans were barbarians in everything they tried to do. The Tokugawa Shogun had called them ‘garlic-eaters’.”

In Vietnam, the ROK units there were excellent.

The PA&E security types were even better.
