Millennials need to save marriage. Society depends on it
The Washington Examiner ^ | 2-13-18 | Jeremiah Poff

Of the many things that millennials find themselves doing, saying “I do” and starting a family does not seem to be one of them.

A 2014 Pew Research study found that the average age range that millennials tied the knot was in their late 20s. Women aren’t getting married until 27, while men are waiting until 29. Your grandparents' generation? They got married by 25 or younger.

But what isn’t included in this study is the number of millennials who are moving in together without getting married. While many would argue that is “preparing for marriage” or “discovering your sexual compatibility,” there are numerous consequences of cohabitating which endanger society as a whole.

This is bad. Really, really, really bad.

When you look at the customs of cultures from around the world throughout history, there is one constant that transcends them all: a man and a woman joined together for life, for the purpose of creating and nurturing the next generation.

Marriage is and always will be the foundational building block of a stable society. The formation and the training of the next generation of humanity is and always will start at home and is entrusted to the father and mother of their sired offspring. To say that this can be changed or altered goes against all that the science of humanity has shown us.

Today, marriage has almost no meaning in the modern, secular sense. It is no more than an excuse to throw a party.

Think about it. When you sign a marriage license, what does that really change about a couple’s situation if you already live together? You can claim dependents on your taxes and have pretty much every other “benefit” of getting legally married but without actually doing it. It adds absolutely nothing.

Today, marriage ceremonies include personalized vows and the signing of a piece of paper which fails to recognize the solemnity of the commitment into which the two parties are entering.

In the Western tradition, marriage was never a purely societal construct. It was a solemn declaration and vow between the man, the woman, and God. In the Roman Catholic Church, the marriage rite vows are specific and cannot be changed. The vows begin with a promise of fidelity through hardships and concludes with the words "till death do us part.”

This phrase seems rather meaningless to most couples now. It is a vow that is upheld 50 percent of the time. Half of all marriages end in divorce in the U.S., according to the American Psychological Association. That means that at least half of American kids are raised in broken homes.

Monogamous and lifelong. Sworn before God and man. That was the foundation of centuries of prosperity and excellence that spurned humanity to accomplishments that awe us today. It all began in the home, where the father and the mother raised their children to become strong, upstanding citizens and contributing members of society. Sadly this is no longer.

The generations before us have muddled an institution that is vital to the survival of a society. It is an indisputable fact that children who are raised by a man and woman who are married, and stay married, are more likely to succeed. We owe it to our future children to make the lifelong commitment of marriage the way it was intended and reverse the trend that was started before us.

It is the duty of each generation to improve upon the world that is left to them. We can talk about climate change or “promoting a culture of inclusivity” all we want, but if we truly want to improve our society and our world, we must look to providing the best formation of the generation that succeeds us. We owe it to them and we owe it to ourselves.

So please millennials, get married and stay married. Have children. Raise them to be upstanding citizens and good contributors to society. Because remember, the very existence and survival of our society depend on it.

Why would they want to? Especially the men? There’s just no upside in this legal climate.

Well said. We celebrated our 59th anniversary last week. It has not always been a bed of roses, but we persevered, raised 4 kids (who are in intact marriages), and now have 12 grandchildren. We would not be able to enjoy these blessings had we given up with every little disappointment, or obstacle.

If they don’t they’ll be required to say “All-ah goes to the snackbar” three times a day, all those mentally challenged LGBTABCDwhatevers will see some interesting changes (from the top of buildings), and those #me too types will, well, just have to take what comes.
And they just might deserve it.

I always thought it odd, that while we had the ongoing efforts to legalize homosexual marriage, that marriage rates in general were in steep.decline.

We are told we must allow homosexual marriage but at the same time, fewer people want to get married at all.

“Millennials need to save marriage. Society depends on it”

So marriage is doomed, then.

Change custody and alimony laws and maybe men will want to get married.

I’m sure we could list out different things contributing to the decline of marriage.

I would add some items of note.

1. Today’s young people earn less, adjusted for inflation, than some past generations. Such economic difficulty can make many, especially young men, wonder how they can ever support a family.

2. Housing is more expensive in many areas nowadays, adjusted for inflation.

3. Nobody talks.much of sex , but that is no longer any factor in people especially men, in any desire for marriage.

4. Many young women today are not appealing as potential marriage partners.

5. Delayed maturity/adulthood in young adults.

6. Young men especially, who enjoy the single life, including Hefner’s Playboy philosophy, may not want to give up what they feel is a fine single life, to be tied down with someone.

7. Too many look at children as a burden. They just don’t want that type of life.

8. Some women, and men too, are so selective about their criteria for a mate, that nobody they meet can meet their standards.

It is difficult to preserve the institution of marraige when the divorce laws and feminist oriented courts are cruel to the young men and all men. When these same laws provide an incentive for the women - wives to divorce even with children so that they can explore. To see if they can do better than their boring old good provider husband. To see if the grass is greener on the other side. Or to be downright promiscuous and all funded via the ex-husband AKA dupe AKA sap. Of course the ex-wife keeps the house and the children while the ex lives in a grubby apartment because this is all he can afford after while paying child support and alimony.

This same lack of money makes him radioactive as far as finding a new wife or girlfriend.

Great, after 50 years of destroying the nuclear family, their roles in society, and marriage in general including the creation of a massive welfare state, so females no longer require a husband. ....

Now somebody wants to make marriage and children cool again, how cold and heartless. What’s next, we should start teaching the difference between right and wrong? where will this madness end.

>>>Why would they want to? Especially the men? There’s just no upside in this legal climate.<<<

I have heard from many Millennial men that they have had sex with many women on the first date. Couple that loose morality with their feminist attitude that has them think they are all strong independent women and don’t need no man.....I think there are just too many women aren’t there that aren’t suitable for the men to pair off with.

My 25ish daughter’s friends, whenever I’ve asked them, have almost all told me they have zero desire to marry, let alone have kids. They look at me like I called them a name when I asked if they were ready to start a family. My take away is that many or most of the ladies aren’t interested in settling down until their eggs are about to expire.

Marriage can be very risky nowadays, especially for males. The liability factor is through the roof.

LOL!

Mr RooRoo and I are Roman Catholic. We tell people: “Divorce? Never!! Murder? Perhaps.” Most people laugh at our quip, although my mom still doesn’t think we’re that funny.

I agree with you. So, in the 20’s, no one wants to marry any more. In the 30’s the females are looking for sperm donors and child support slaves and any male who gets sucked into that web deserves his fate. It might be worthwhile to marry by the time they are 60 so they have someone to drive them to the doctor.

So, I look for Millennials to seek marriage in 2040 or so.

History is replete with societies that collapsed because they did not adopt the norms that stabilize them.

If American society has to go through this cataclysm, so be it. What will emerge afterwards will be a stable society conforming to the discovered norms of the millennia, or it will just cease to exist and become another lesson of history.

All we can do is warn them.
