Liberals outraged: Trump wants to replace food stamps — with food!
The Washington Times ^ | 2-13-18 | Joseph Curl

In his big budget proposal Monday, President Trump offered a novel idea: Instead of giving needy people stamps they can redeem for food, why not just give them actual food?

As you might guess, liberals were enraged by the notion. How dare Mr. Trump try to take food stamps away from hungry people and give them — of all things — food?

Here’s how the liberal HuffPost saw it: “Facing a trillion-dollar deficit because of his just-passed tax cuts, President Donald Trump has an idea for how to get some of that money back: making poor people eat beans and rice.”

Oh, the humanity!

Currently, food stamps — known officially as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — are provided for some 42 million people, 80 percent of whom get food vouchers each month worth at least $90 per person. They can be redeemed at many stores for food, but the program is rife with abuse.

Under the Trump proposal, those 80 percent of all SNAP recipients would get about half of their benefits in the form of a “USDA Foods package,” NPR reported. “The package was described in the budget as consisting of ‘shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables.’”

The program would be called “America’s Harvest Box.” Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue called it “a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families — and all of it is home-grown by American farmers and producers.”

Who’s going to put the boxes of food together?

Okay, keep the food stamps but they’re only good at a federally operated food store that does not sell cigarettes or alcohol or snack foods.

I am so happy President Trump has embraced this idea.

Us on the right have been saying this for years.

It is truly a win-win for everyone.

Instead of blowing the SNAP Card on Booze and Smokes you would get a monthly supply of:

50 lbs Bag of Red Beans & Rice

50 lbs Bag of Flour

10 lbs Bag of Powdered Milk

10 lbs Block of Cheese

10 lbs Bologna Log

And just because us Americans are super generous, I propose we also include two 10 lbs Bags of Generic Cheerios and/or USDA Corn Flakes.

There, the poor have just been fed by the Taxpayer.

They are stuck eating beans and rice you say? Think of it this way, every cent you give to the Federal Food Program is bread taken from your Child's mouth.

But of course you aren't suppose to take into account the needs of the people who actually pay for all this.

Wonder if the food deliverers will get an eyeful of the lexuses and Escalades in the driveway of the poor people.

William F. Buckley suggested this more than 50 years ago.

He said provide basic food staples in a separate area of the grocery store with unlabeled basic food items, eliminating starvation in America.

I predict this will blow up on Trump. I remember how awful that mean Pres Reagan was for giving the poor a block of stinky cheese. This will all be turned around on Trump to expose his elitism and disregard for the least of us. The media will beat it like a dead horse.

I realize those on food stamps have a real struggle. I don’t begrudge them the desire to have a couple of beers or sugar snacks. Why can’t they have liberty from government intrusion? Does dependency on getting food assistance give the gov’t the right to demand they take from a basic staple of beans and rice?

Why ignore the elephant in the room which is Corruption?

Maybe retailers that actually have locations in these sh*#hole neighborhoods have a valid complaint. They have been pressured to maintain a presence despite increased operating costs. But food producers will be lining up for those contracts.

Something akin to LRRP rations. They’re good enough for the US Military.

Mom's job was to hand out Gov't cheese when I was a kid. We got what was turned down - usually one end of the box was a little crushed, or something. Product was fine, and since we were getting by on her $3.78/hr, we appreciated it.

The cheese was delicious. Melted like Velveeta, tasted like cheddar. Nothing like it in the stores.

The flour and PB was pretty good too, IIRC. Powdered Milk, not so much, but I don't especially like powdered milk anyway....

“I don’t begrudge them the desire to have a couple of beers or sugar snacks———”

I do,those are the type of things that people that are on a budget and NOT on food stamps do without

There was never a potato chip or soda in my house when our kids were young.

Better to spend extra effort to enforce the eligibility rules of the current market based system.

making poor people eat beans and rice

red beans and rice
10-bean soup
jambalaya
black bean soup
pinto-bean-dip tostadas

You get the idea. I've cooked all of them in the past three months myself, just because I like them.

Personally I'd reassign everybody in the FBI to this task.

“A lot of them should be stigmatized. It might be an incentive to make better choices.”

I’m sure somehow that would be racist.

Which, if it were true, would be bad....because?
