This may not be the best place to start this thread, but then again it might be.
We are talking about what kids in school can do to protect themselves.
The link is only a suggestion. Add your own.
LOVE IT!!!!
Brings back a memory...picture an old car wheel on its side...an old bike handlebar stuck in the wheel to make a turret, and an old bike tube. It was fort protection.
But please don't stop funning wid me.
Hang in there...the tough times are just beginning.
I'm always here if you need me.

“Id like to see a video on the old-fashioned sling (David/Goliath-style)”
I made one once. Could launch half-bricks. Really went far but I basically couldn’t aim them.
Maybe they can fashion a crossbow using available school materials, such as pencils, rubber bands and condoms. At least teach the kids how to defend themselves somehow, if they’re going to keep them disarmed.
Yes, the next thing you know, we will see signs saying: This school is a slingshot free zone. 👎
There ya go! A huge cardboard box could make for a good fort, too. Also handy when folded down flat to slide down hills on.
It takes a lot of practice to be a classical slinger.
Some ancient slingers had their sling attached at the end of roughly a yard long stick. I’ve tried this and I think you get a little more control so the learning curve to come proficient might be shorter. People who have re-created the Rhodian & Balearic slings and gotten proficient say if you use the lead bulla (what these ancients used!) you get something that strikes with frightening impact.
Bump.
Yea, we weren’t participating in the gun free school nonsense either.
Most of ours always had at lest a knife or six on them at all times during school.
Soft targets need armed security - preferably by well trained adults.
Decades ago my church youth group went sledding. Not everyone had a sled so the farm family who hosted had prepped cardboard with wax. Best sled ever! The real sleds were abandoned for the waxed cardboard. We flew down that hill!
Very interesting thread. Very basic and light. Easy to make.
Thanks so much for posting.

One word:
Homeschool.
Google “david sling”. There’s plenty of stuff out there.
I made my first sling when I was 8, out of a couple of bootlaces and a scrap of leather. Got to be fairly good at slinging, though never really expert. Nowadays my shoulder will only permit about two full-strength casts.
I still have a Wrist Rocket around someplace.

Ha! I used that today on a squirrel who has been tormenting my dog. Pulled it out after 20 years and was concerned about the tubing. Only used half pull and the marble dropped the tree rat at 20 feet! When that sucker fell, my dog looked at me, like, where you been! Going to look for fresh tube tomorrow for the old wrist rocket!
Never thought to wax them. but I bet it made ‘em real speedsters. Was pretty fast just with cardboard alone. Great fun and you didn’t have to haul a heavy sled back up the hill to have another go!
Great memories of my grandfather cutting out slingshots from 3/4” scrap plywood on his jig saw table in the cellar of his house.
It should not be difficult to find. Even hobby shops that use them for hi-starts will probably have them too.
