I’m a military man and I think we should ban assault weapons

Guns and I go back a long way.

My father was a champion skeet shooter. A picture of him aiming his favorite pump skyward has pride of place in our living room. He owned fine rifles and shotguns, and he valued them.

My first experience with pulling a trigger came late, by family standards. I was already 7 or 8 when my dad and “Uncle” George took me out back of Old Lily’s house and handed me a sawed-off shotgun (illegal then and now) kept handy for woodchucks and rattlesnakes. The recoil didn’t knock me off my feet, but my shoulder ached for weeks.

I’m blessed to have few material regrets, but I still feel a sting when I recall how, after my father’s bankruptcy, we had to sell his guns to put food on the table. Those arms were important to him and, thus, to me.

I served in the US Army, including unforgettable years in an infantry battalion. I fired my share of automatic weapons, from M16A1s to machine guns and even Kalashnikovs. (Let’s not talk about dud-grenade disposal . . .)

And I’m a gun owner. As I write these lines, there’s an 1858 Tower musket behind me and a Colt on my desk.

But I believe, on moral, practical and constitutional grounds, that no private citizen should own an automatic weapon or a semi-automatic weapon that can easily be modified for automatic effects.

Ralph is very safety conscious. He also regularly agitates for the US to go to war with Russia.

There are over 3 million “assault” type rifles owned by US citizens. The value of these guns is between $500 to $2,500. How would the ban work? You could say that no more sales of assault weapon but there are still those 3 million guns. Will there be a buy back? If everyone sold that would be roughly 4.5 billion dollars. This is assuming everyone would sell. Those who kept their assault weapons could sell them later at a premium. I’m curious.

You carried one:

No I didn’t. I did carry an M16 A2. Assault weapon? Nah. Didn’t have one of those. Just a rifle, some grenades, a bayonet. But no. I didn’t have an assault rifle or assault weapon. That’s just dumb.

Hey Ralph, I am a military man myself and I think you need to look no further than the assault weapons ban of 1994, idiot. Furthermore, any type assault weapons ban was and will never be a comprehensive fix to gun violence.....idiot x2.

“...no private citizen should own an automatic weapon or a semi-automatic weapon that can easily be modified for automatic effects.”

Automatics require a special permit to acquire, are illegal without it.
A rubber band can produce an ‘automatic effects’ on any semi-auto.

This clown must be a rat and does NOT comprehend the Second Amendment’s purpose. Very unbecoming for ex military.

You're not reading carefully. If you want to deny that the M16A2 falls into the category of "assault rifle", that's your business ... but it puts you at odds with reality. Thank you for carrying the thing, though.

After reading each line in that, I have concluded that this guy is a worthless slug. And his dad raised a limp wristed weenie too.

“Look at me with my decorative Musket and revolver!”

What a loon.

Isn’t “assault weapon” an invention of Diane Feinstein?

“my dad and “Uncle” George took me out back of Old Lily’s house and handed me a sawed-off shotgun (illegal then and now) kept handy for woodchucks and rattlesnakes. “

I think his “Uncle” took him out back quite a few times to play with his sawed-off. And illegal ? He should keep his mouth shut because his butt crack is showing.

His uncle kept the gun handy for getting kids into the back of his van.

As a formerly active duty Marine, I support each and every word that is in the United States Constitution as originally written.

Especially those 27 words that comprise the text of the Second Amendment. For the Second Amendment is what puts the teeth into the entire Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The final 4 words: “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED” are the exclamation point.

I really do not give two hoots about the opinion of Lt. Col. Peters, even though he is entitled to his opinion.

Semper Fi!

FINE - I thought fully automatic rifles were banned for the general public. That is the definitio of an ASSAULT WEAPON

Encyclopædia Britannica...Assault rifle, military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and that has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire. Because they are light and portable yet still able to deliver a high volume of fire with reasonable accuracy at modern combat ranges of 1,000–1,600 feet (300–500 metres), assault rifles have replaced the high-powered bolt-action and semiautomatic rifles of the World War II era as the standard infantry weapon of modern armies.

If such a definition is to be found in the ATF site I could not find it in any direct fashion-might be buried in bureaucratic legalese

Any item used to assault another becomes an ‘assault weapon’ — a drilldriver, a chainsaw, a gas ice auger.

Why does this clown pre-qualify his point, “I’m a military man”? What is he saying? I don’t get it?

Since the real reason for the 2nd Amendment is to protect the nation against tyranny, and tyranny is probably impossible unless the military goes along with it, he is speaking from the point of view of an enemy combatant.

Of course he would think that having a well armed opposition to a tyrannical government was bad for the military that might be defending such a government. What do you think the Redcoats getting shot in the 1700s thought about the colonists having good rifles, plenty of ammunition, and cannons?

Military members and veterans who truly believe in defending the Constitution would never seek to remove any of the rights enumerated in it. And they recognize that much of the strength of our nation comes from the fact that if there was a really serious threat to our nation millions of armed citizens could join with them to defend our nation.

look Ralph....mass murder can just as easily be done by having a revolver or a shotgun, or for that matter, a homemade bomb, or acid or incendiary devices....

banning a certain type of gun is not going to stop anyone who wants to kill you....they'll find a way, and that way might be worse.....

guns are not important but the RIGHT to own them is...

the more little increments TPTB make in gun confiscation, the more they'll demand...

count on it...

Slight correction:

Gun ownership is high in Switzerland, at approximately 0.5 guns per person. About 30% of Swiss citizens own guns. Military issued firearms may be purchased from the government after service, and then the gun is converted to a non-assault weapon. Restrictions can be placed on both the firearm and its ammunition. Put simply, the idea that the Swiss are required to own firearms and the idea that all Swiss own firearms are myths.

Additionally there is a distinction between permitted ownership and permitted use. Neither are guaranteed by right until permitted. These permits are handled on a canton level.

Ralph Peters is a sawed off, two faced, squeaky sqealing little pr*ck. He went on an anti-Trump rant on Maria Bartiromo’s show and endorsed Hillary. I don’t care what this steaming pile of bovine excrement has to say about anything.
