I’m a military man and I think we should ban assault weapons

Guns and I go back a long way.

My father was a champion skeet shooter. A picture of him aiming his favorite pump skyward has pride of place in our living room. He owned fine rifles and shotguns, and he valued them.

My first experience with pulling a trigger came late, by family standards. I was already 7 or 8 when my dad and “Uncle” George took me out back of Old Lily’s house and handed me a sawed-off shotgun (illegal then and now) kept handy for woodchucks and rattlesnakes. The recoil didn’t knock me off my feet, but my shoulder ached for weeks.

I’m blessed to have few material regrets, but I still feel a sting when I recall how, after my father’s bankruptcy, we had to sell his guns to put food on the table. Those arms were important to him and, thus, to me.

I served in the US Army, including unforgettable years in an infantry battalion. I fired my share of automatic weapons, from M16A1s to machine guns and even Kalashnikovs. (Let’s not talk about dud-grenade disposal . . .)

And I’m a gun owner. As I write these lines, there’s an 1858 Tower musket behind me and a Colt on my desk.

But I believe, on moral, practical and constitutional grounds, that no private citizen should own an automatic weapon or a semi-automatic weapon that can easily be modified for automatic effects.

I was 11B. I have no idea what an assault rifle is.

You carried one: your M16 (or M4, if that's what you had). Your enemies carried (AK47|AKM|AK74|etc), also assault rifles. Assault rifles (from the German sturmgewehr) are compact, select-fire rifles chambered for intermediate power cartridges.

"Assault weapon", OTOH, is a vague term invented by "enemies ... domestic" of the Constitution. Their purpose is to instill fear in the ignorant populace, and convince legislators to pass unconstitutional legislation banning various types of firearms.

He’s a Fudd and an idiot. The militia was defined in 1792 by Congress to mean all free men between the ages of 18 and 45 and has since been amended to include all people.

That “well regulated militia” part always gets left out. It’s called the “National Guard”

10 U.S. Code § 246 - Militia: composition and classes (emphasis added):

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.

(b) The classes of the militia are—

(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and

(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

It’s a miracle this guy even made Colonel when he’s that ignorant of the Constitution he swore to protect and defend.

In today’s Army, the general officers are worse.

Yes, and this came into prohibitionist lexicon when it was becoming obvious that “Saturday Night Special” was getting to be old hat.

Peters was a REMF. For civilians the term is degrading and used by real combat troops. REMF means rear echelon MF. Peters was MI.

Why does this clown pre-qualify his point, “I’m a military man”? What is he saying? I don’t get it?

There are plenty of people in the military that are for the 2nd Amendment and against any type of weapons ban this clown is for.

What a douche bag!

Alexander Hamilton wrote in Federalist #29:

if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little, if at all, inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow-citizens.

The "militia" was meant to be the civilian population-at-large, armed with their own weapons equal to those of a standing army, and trusted to bear them in their own common defense.

“None of the assault rifles found on the battlefields of Afghanistan, Iraq, or Vietnam are available for sale in American sporting goods stores.”

Yet in Hollywood, all rifles that are used in movies tend to be automatic. Funny how none of the actors who want to ban rifles step up and demand that they aren’t used in their movies.

Yeah Hitler was a military man too and agreed with your position. He wanted to disarm the public and said he was doing it in the name of safety. Just like you Peter!

I was reading about an early attempt by the British in Boston to go after a Powder House. They were turned back without any shots fired by an overwhelming group of men (militia). After that the county got together and took over the British organized militia and “fired” all of the current leaders established by the King. Then they voted them back in again - but this time under the county!

They then made a charter (The Powder House Act(?), which included weekly training and if men didn’t have their own arms or powder, would be provided them from the public stores.

The Constitutional Congress heard about this, and also backed this idea up, and persuaded people to send arms and money in support of the Boston militia.

The term “well regulated” is pretty much defined by these actions. Just as in a “well regulated” clock - these militia were in good operation - the men had weapons and were trained and were organized to take on a tyrannical government. That is the one thing we lack today - organization.

It is easy to say to the government to try to take my gun away from me. But - without effective organization, I will just be one more lone gun “nut-job” with an “arsenal” in my basement. (The redcoats going after the powder house - a year before Concord, were met with something like 2,000 armed men!)
