Trump stuns GOP, Dems with impassioned push for gun control

President Trump stunned Democrats and Republicans alike on Wednesday by pushing for gun-control measures that have long been poison pills for the GOP and pipe dreams for their opponents.

The president, during a televised, hourlong sitdown at the White House with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, appeared to back a bill proposed in 2013 by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania that would expand background checks for weapons purchases.

The bill — written in response to the 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Conn. — failed in the Senate due to intense Republican opposition.

But Trump called it a good starting point and even questioned whether other ideas championed by Democrats, such as an assault-weapons ban and raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21, could be included in one bill everyone could agree on.

“Fellas, if you can all get together and we can get one great piece of legislation — people want to see something happen. It would be so beautiful to have one bill that everyone could support,” Trump said as California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein sat with a stunned smile on her face.

“I think it’s time that a president stepped up. I’m talking Democrat and Republican presidents, they’ve not stepped up,” Trump said.

Trump also shot down the GOP’s proposed Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act, which would allow people with permits to carry guns across state lines.

“Background checks on private sales, by themselves, are unenforceable. You can’t enforce background checks on private sales without knowing what guns are out there...”

I don’t know. Gubment is pretty sneaky...

Pass a law requiring all gun sales have a background check. Seller advertises a gun for sale. Undercover ATF agent buys it without the required background check. Seller is arrested and goes to jail. More sales and arrests occur. It would get pretty hairy selling guns without the check.

They want this for private sales and gun shows or anywhere else. Even between family members. Want to give you brother a firearm, got to go through the new improved background check.

I have supported our President since day one but that support is not unconditional.

“Nope, just not going to blindly support this. “

You are not going to support what? What is “this”?

Be specific.

Trump 'stunned' them with his DACA offer and they are going to sit on their hands about it.
What he has offered and what will come out of Congress will be two different things.

Raising the age to purchase from 18 to 21. Maybe
Updating NICS records on mentally impaired individuals - Definetly.....even though that has been on the books for a while.
Assault weapons ban - Not likely. The emotional ride is over and now the critical thinking politicians looking to get re-elected are NOT going to risk that.

Thanks

Why can’t people be calm, vet the lies and misinterpretations before blasting off in the wrong direction like so may have? I started a thread about it.

Hey remember Trump on DACA? He said he would give citizenship to 1.8 million illegals. Just bring me a bill and I’ll sign it. This is DACA all over again.

“You don’t seem to understand that is a big part of this beltway theater performance.”

So, we are supposed to be entertained at this “theater,” and give raucous applause to being insulted and offended? He summarily dismissed some of the lawmakers present, of his own party, whom he NEEDS.

We are told that that is just his management style. Well, he’ll be needing their support when the Rats take the House and impeach him; he should not be surprised if that support is not forthcoming. They will gladly opt for Pence over Trump.

“Trump should not even be entertaining this NRA as the bad guy narrative and he is.”

Another flat out lie on your part.

"That is why people aren’t showing up to vote for the GOP. These crooks are still walking free and the swamp is not getting drained as promised."

And the President is ordering the AG to make up law and violate every American's constitutional rights but is unwilling to order the AG to actually do his freakin job and investigate and prosecute known criminals of the previous administration.

And we now have companies like WalMart that think they can just make up their own gun laws. I have news for WalMart, they are about to get sued as soon as a they refuse to sell a 20 year old a rifle based on their age.

And the president has stated he plans on issuing a totally unconstitutional executive fiat law that violates all American's constitutional rights.

Other than that things are just duckie!

“Rather like DACA, he gave Dems a taste of it, then took it away.”

DACA is still with us, and in the exact format that Obamugabe set for it.

" So if he “attacked” the NRA, why crickets from them? Think."

You obviously didn't see Dana Loesch on Fox this morning. Didn't sound like crickets to me. So yes he did disparage the NRA and I can tell you they are none too happy about it.

I’ve always thought he was a one-termer. It took a perfect storm for him to win in 2016. Hillary Clinton was a terrible candidate and Trump beat her in battleground states because she basically refused to campaign and he hit every state talking about jobs, jobs, jobs. On top of that she was a crook and all America knew it. I think . Biden would have beaten him. I can’t stand the SOB but Biden would have never lost PA and the Rust Belt States. If Dems take control of the House Trump will be impeached. Mueller will also bring charges against him and it’ll be something to do with the Russians from years ago. Trump will deny it and he’ll be convicted of lying. He should have never made Sessions AG. He’s not tough enough. If Trump is kicked out of office he can thank his appointment of Sessions. That started the ball rolling. If he does survive and ends up running for re-election some minority in their 40s, will be elected. Probably Kamala Harris with Michele Obama on the bottom of the ticket. Their campaign slogan will be “Trump is a pervert, Trump is a pervert”. America is all but finished when those socialist bastards get back in office but I’ll bet it happens.

Trump is just playing to the crowd. He is televising these listening group meetings to reveal that he is not unreasonable or unwilling to solve problems working in a bipartisan manner. The devil is always in the details.

The onus is on the Dems to demonstrate that they really want to find solutions beyond just grabbing and outlawing guns. Gun free zones don't work. We need to harden our schools.
