SWAT Officers Who Rushed to Scene of Parkland Shooting Without Permission Have Been Disciplined

Two Miramar Police Department SWAT team members, Det. Jeffery Gilbert and Det. Carl Schlosser, were off duty and training at Coral Springs when they learned of the shooting at nearby Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month, where 17 people were killed.

Instead of treating the two men as heroes, the SWAT's unit commander informed the two men that they had been temporarily suspended from their duties. They were unwanted, you see.

“Effective immediately you have been suspended from the SWAT Team until further notice,” wrote Capt. Kevin Nosowicz, the unit’s commander, in a Feb. 22 memo obtained by the Miami Herald through a public records request. “Please make arrangements with the training department to turn in your SWAT-issued rifle.” (Miami Herald)

Pat Franklin, a retired Miami Beach police detective, offered further explanation for the disciplinary action.

"You don’t want to let those guys loose into something that’s chaotic where they might take inappropriate action," he noted. "It is prudent to have them stand down unless there is a plan.”

They needed a plan? Or they didn’t want them to disrupt the plan in place?

Are you a Police Officer? Have you ever been a Police Officer? We have rules and regulations covering this stuff. If I am at a training operation in City A, and there is an active shooter in City B, I damn well better tell my Boss that I am leaving the area where I am SUPPOSED to be and headed somewhere else, especially if where I am headed may result in me taking a life, or my life being taken. Also, off duty ends the minute you respond, because you are now acting under the jurisdiction of your agency. If someone breaks into my house and I shoot them, are you saying that I don’t have to let my Agency know? You’re kidding right? In fact, I couldn’t even leave my patrol area to take meal, without letting my Sgt. know. Come on.

That is my point.

They knew their guys were training with the Corral Springs PD. They already freaking knew where they were.

The Corral Springs PD freaking knew where they were.

So the charges you threw at them about "freelancing" and "crossing into someone else's district without telling anyone" are not valid.

They were where they were suppose to be, with the guys they were suppose to be with.

The only thing they did not do was call their boss who had no way of knowing what was going on and play "mother may I".

The lesson is clear: if you are in Florida and a shooting starts, you are on your own. And don’t bother calling 911.

Those SWAT guys saved lives.

We do not know exactly what these guys did. They showed up. After that, it is all speculation.

However, if SWAT officers are a few minutes away and they don’t respond to multiple shots fired at a school, we would be LIVID. Doesn’t matter what department they care from.

yeah, Pat Franklin - all able bodied people should wait while the shooter kills more until a plan is developed. SWAT SHOULD already know how to deal with these psychos. Isn't that what they're trained to do?

As a Native Floridian(82yo), is it Florida or the Liberals from Blue States metastasising in? I say the latter!

If you’re leaving an assigned area to go somewhere else, you need to let someone know you’re going. Or at least have CSPD Dispatch call yours.

Crazy world where no good and heroic deeds go unpunished - they need a new SWAT Commander....

My argument is not that they responded. The reason given for suspension is they didn’t let anyone at their agency know they were responding. That’s a legitimate reason.

When 2 men are TDY from Miramar to Coral Springs for SWAT cross training and Coral Springs unit moves to site, do the 2 men move with that unit? TDY means you are with that unit and responsible to that unit. Would you call by phone or radio? Would the two departments even be on same radio freq.?

What a bunch of leftist boobs these Florida police are. These SWAT team members were willing to risk their lives to help the kids in that school---a marked contrast to the police, who sat around on their hands---and they punished THEM???? Florida is a mental wasteland, with seashells for brains.

It depends on what Miramar’s policy is or what the regs are for multi agency task forces. I’m not saying they were wrong for responding but they needed to let someone in Miramar know they were going.

The guy that said this has no business in law enforcement.

He not only does not make us safer, he puts us (and our children) at increased risk.

That is unacceptable.

If the local citizens rose up and lynched him, that community would actually be safer.

When your death would be a boon to society, that's a red flag that calls for introspection.

Also if I were the Boss, I’d have given them a medal. But if they were suspended for failing to notify, it’s a legit reason.

If I were them I would start looking for another job and tell my department I can’t work for a bunch of dithering cowards anymore. Sounds like this SWAT commander is a screw-up waiting to happen. A plan is nice to have but once things start rolling they rarely go as planned and the inability to adapt to the changes is what gets you and others killed.

LEO agencies in this area are in full blown CYA mode at this point with few departments other than Coral Springs looking competent.

I’m telling you and this just adds credence that the democrats wanted this to happen and I would not be surprised if they did not organize the massacre.

sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one.

If you are responding to an incident outside your jurisdiction, you have a RESPONSIBILITY to let your command where the hell you are.

Off duty police respond to situations every day and I've never heard anyone being suspended for doing so.

Here's one example.

Mass Murder Prevented by Off-Duty Cop

I don’t want to live anywhere where LEOs are going to stand down until there is a plan. Or where LEOs hide or do nothing while people are being murdered.

Several years ago there was a situation where 2 murderers ended up holing up in a house out in the sticks in this area. The first LEO on the scene realized there was a hostage...every LEO in this area responded. There was a big shoot out, only the bad guys were killed. Hostage saved, problem solved. It was very wild west, but very effective. We don’t have SWAT teams or other fancy LEO, or high tech gear, but we have people that will give their life if need be to do their job.

It sounds like in a city only certain people are allowed to respond, and then most are not allowed to do anything even if they are right there. I do not want to live anywhere like that. I don’t understand that the very people who live in places like that think they want gun control. Makes zero sense, are they not aware their LEO will not protect them even if they are in the parking lot?
