The host of America's Most Wanted, who also helped create a national registry for sex offenders, says the same system is needed for mentally ill people looking to buy guns.
We got John Walsh Saturday at LAX and asked what he made of Florida's new gun law -- in which the age limit to purchase guns was raised to 21 ... and teachers can now be armed.
He says it's a step in the right direction, but also thinks arming teachers is the wrong way to protect schools from potential shooters -- he wants trained pros on the ground instead.
Here's the most interesting tidbit ... John apparently believes a national registry logging people with serious mental illness needs to be implemented for would-be gun owners.

I think we should have a mental health registry for potential voters.
Then there would be a lot fewer Democrats elected.
Has anyone ever met a Psychiatrist or a Psychologist who is not severely troubled?
Umm...No.
OK. You’re on it! Turn in your guns!
Those who are labeled islamophobic will be put on the list.
Lois Lerner.
Let me know when the DMV includes Sanity Testing when you go in for your Driver’s License.
Background Checks for all Car Purchasers, including Private Sales.
Pass a Law that Car Keys must be locked up in a Car Safe.
We need all Public places to be Car Free Zones.
What we really need, John Boy, is prison time for Lefties who fail to report crimes by crazy people in order to collect government checks.
........ This whole so called “Mental Illness” thing is a clever trap .... It should be limited ONLY to those who fall under “Abnormal Propensities for Violence” and not those who have eating disorders or some other inane phobia and such.
The ACLU was responsible for that.
Hey RL...
This little psychopath was already UNDER mental health care. He was also on the radar of every Alphabet Agency at local, country, state level, and the FBI too.
He should have been put on the no-buy list in NICS the moment he was expelled from school for making terroristic threats, and after the 45+ LEO visits to his home foe domestic violence.
Every single f***tard in that chain of agencies did no do their job, and this loser managed to buy a gun legally because of them incompetence. And they’re still employed, too...
Not to mention the four deputies - the guys with body armor and guns - peeing themselves outside. Local LEOs “blew past them” as they went in (their words, not mine).
THAT is what is deliberately being left out of the discussion, and what we need to repeat over and over again.
Oh, I’m with you NFHale...I was just trying to be a little sarcastic!
I thinkd also need a mental health registry for journalists.
I'm on them because I know my mental state was bad due to depression (never homicidal!) - in the depths of my illness I knew my thinking was 'off'. You're getting confused by the analysis of statistics.
Columbine, Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook killers were on a combo of Ritalin and Paxil (and one other w Lanza). NONE were on Prozac. That combo creates "rare side effects" of "suicidal" and "homocidal ideation." The VT killer and baby-killer Andrea Yates were on Effexor, in combo with others. Pfizer was sued by Russell Yates and was forced to add "homocidal ideation" to its label.
That would be easy ... just copy&paste.
if we had a mental health criteria for gun owning; very few govt employees would be able to own guns
I sort of think everyone is mentally unstable depending on what time of the day it is.
Once we start we are on a slippery slope, so lets not go there.
That's where these things lead.
The phrase ‘psychotropic drugs’ covers prozac and many others.
