Sessions has no shortages of testicles - he is just patient and low key.
It would not be wise to pre-maturely publicize the investigation, when you could still be rolling up their networks and preparing airtight cases.

I agree with this sentiment.
In order for Sessions to do what he did today, it was vital that he appear to the world as “pure as the driven snow”. Hence the recusal and all the collective insults he has received here.
He now is in the perfect position to take action (well supported by other investigations) and the left will have trouble now with their (coming) claim that Session is just a puppet for Trump.
