It’s called negotiating a-holes.

The President exempted Mexico and Canada from the tariffs while NAFTA is being renegotiated. That was the plan. More misreporting from the WSJ trying to make President Trump look bad.

Thank you, I was just about to say that... If not fake news, it’s certainly misleading.

WSJ appears to have no understanding for how business is done and how deals are made.

If tariffs are bad, why is the personal income tax good? Trump has traded one for the other. The mercantilists seem to think that is OK to cut my disposable income, but not to raise the price of imported goods!

That's because the once business-savvy WSJ has been infiltrated and taken over by SJW's.

President Trump’s practice of staking out extreme positions on trade as a negotiating tactic is a sign of his brilliance. Or so we’re told. But that theory took on water last week, when Mr. Trump had to backtrack on a promise to hit Mexico and Canada with a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum, without any concessions from either Mexico City or Ottawa.

Let me get this straight:

1) Trump preaches the approach of negotiating an extreme position then compromising.

2) Trump took an extreme position then backed off of it.

And the WSJ thinks this is some kind of counter-example to his approach?

"while NAFTA is being renegotiated."

Yes, I heard him say that in his initial statement.

Everything he does is reported in the most negative context possible. I've never seen anything like this.

More bloviating from the No Borders WSJ.

Funny how they like the idea of allowing invasion but really like the idea of white American males defending their wealth.

But when the same men demand to have real jobs and the means to raise families...Oh No. Can’t have that. We CheepChit from outside the USA, you guys want too much.

WSJ and CNN are equally credible as news sources. What utter BS. He is negotiating with them. He will remove tariffs with anyone willing to negotiate. How come I know this and WSJ and CNN don’t?

Oh, they know this. They know it well. They are purposely leaving out important information, knowing that most of the LIV who read or watch this "news" will suck it up, report it to their friends at swap meets and kids soccer games.

The concept of a tariff on steel is misleading.

There is a very lengthy document called the Schedule of Harmonized tariffs 2018. For those of you that are really isolationists, harmonized means that the various items have been agreed to on a global scale. (https://hts.usitc.gov/?query=steel)

So, when a tariff is laid on it will be for specific harmonized tariff number. There are tons of steel related harmonized tariff items. ie
7208.37.0030 High-strength steel

As an example Heading Subhead 0104.20 Goats, we impose a tariff on goats from some countries of $.68 per head. Goats from many countries are exempt.

So it is possible to focus on just a few Canadian Steel products that somehow are unfair and tariff only one or perhaps all of them. Most of the various Harmonized Tariff steel items would be left alone. THat way, specific items can be negotiated.

That is the pattern set out from the beginning when south Korean washing machines that are specific Harmonized Tariff items were selected. The negotiations will go item by item where trading parties drop specific Harmonized Tariff items duties on American products or suffer tariffs on their specific exports.

I don’t know the particulars on chinese steel but believe there are several, perhaps many commodity products that are dumped. It is then necessary to tariff some or all of the various harmonized tariff products by specific number. And in addition, other specific manufactured products can be teriffed if Chinese duties are not lifted on specific American products in the manner laid out for South Korean washing machines .
