This story tells what happened, even if it is CNN. I read some other coverage as well.

Heh. Seems that the train accidents here to appear to always have a “Trump’s fault for not enough money, etc” attached to it.

There remains confusion among officials as to the true number of passengers aboard the train, with East Coast Railway's chief public relations officer JP Mishra suggesting that several hundred passengers may have already exited the train prior to the carriages becoming detached from the engine and the true number may be closer to 500.

What I would like to know is how many were in the train and how many were on the train.

Having visited India I know that taking a drink of water can be dangerous. And although I never ride the rail system it’s easy for me to imagine it being a near suicidal decision.

Bus accidents, trains, maybe ferries too, you hear about that from India, I’m glad no one was hurt, and in spite of all, they are classified as a “free country”. Good with the bad, they’ve been a civilization forever.

“A disaster was narrowly averted in eastern India Saturday after a runaway train carrying up to 1,000 passengers”

Must have had only 2 or three cars.

I have to wonder, though. Indian trains, for all their shabby appearance, are run fairly well. They’re also a lot more manual than US passenger trains. I wonder if it was a problem with the locomotive, because if the train were just rolling out of control, every carriage has an independent brake wheel, and they could have just set the brakes on all the carriages. If the locomotive was still driving, though, that would be a different matter.

“”The train was eventually stopped after railway workers placed wooden wedges on the tracks, bringing it to a crunching halt.””

I can’t imagine why that wouldn’t have caused it to go off the rails. What am I missing?
