A disaster was narrowly averted in eastern India Saturday after a runaway train carrying up to 1,000 passengers rolled with speed for several miles before being brought to an emergency stop by railway staff.

Video on social media shows the train, which was traveling from the western state of Gujarat to Odisha state in the east, speeding past stations as onlookers and passengers scream helplessly.

The train was eventually stopped after railway workers placed wooden wedges on the tracks, bringing it to a crunching halt.

This story tells what happened, even if it is CNN. I read some other coverage as well.

Heh. Seems that the train accidents here to appear to always have a “Trump’s fault for not enough money, etc” attached to it.

Don’t watch the one with Jon Voight and Julia Roberts brother. It’s torture to get through that one....
Guess no one could climb up on top and run to the locomotive and shut it down. Heck even cowboys wearing boots could do that!!

There remains confusion among officials as to the true number of passengers aboard the train, with East Coast Railway's chief public relations officer JP Mishra suggesting that several hundred passengers may have already exited the train prior to the carriages becoming detached from the engine and the true number may be closer to 500.

What I would like to know is how many were in the train and how many were on the train.

Indian train operators, engineers, etc., are the best in the world, and are accustomed to circumstances most in the "more advanced" countries would find outrageous / unacceptable / not sufficiently automated. I would much rather be on a runaway train in India than on the Northeast corridor AMTRAK or VIA rail in Canada: Indians - not their computers - know how to handle trains, and take immense pride in it.

We’ve ridden trains for considerable distance in India...quite the experience. The yelling of “chai...chai...chai!” and “chicken biriyani...mutton biriyani...biriyani!” still ring in my years after years.

“Around 30,000 Indians died in railway accidents in 2015, according to the latest available official data”

Best in the world? Sure........

Having visited India I know that taking a drink of water can be dangerous. And although I never ride the rail system it’s easy for me to imagine it being a near suicidal decision.
