“Having visited India I know that taking a drink of water can be dangerous.”

Jeremy Wade, the River Monsters fisherman, has a new show called Mighty Rivers.
The first show was about the Ganges and how polluted it is.

He started at the Bay of Bengal and worked his way upriver.
No fish at the mouth of the river.
At the Hindu holy city of Varanasi the river was revoltingly polluted with human waste pumped straight into the river.

At another city further upriver the tanneries were pumping toxic chemicals like chromium straight into the river.
Some of that water was diverted to irrigation systems for food crops.

He had to go into the mountains beyond any large city to find clean water with native fish in abundance.

Based on what was shown I would never visit India much less drink or eat anything local.

Maybe those oh so bright Indian H1B workers here need to stay and fix their own country.
OTOH I can see why the want to unass the place.

“”The train was eventually stopped after railway workers placed wooden wedges on the tracks, bringing it to a crunching halt.””

I can’t imagine why that wouldn’t have caused it to go off the rails. What am I missing?

I read that that is what halted the train. Am I missing something? Did the article say the train went off the rails? Then, I did not fully read the article I posted, apologies.

Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a one way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I’m neither here nor there

“A disaster was narrowly averted in eastern India Saturday after a runaway train carrying up to 1,000 passengers “

500 of which were on the roof.

No - I said that I was surprised that putting anything on the track to STOP the train didn’t have the result of crashing it!! Seems odd that a speeding train such as described would come to a halt simply because of running into something on the tracks. I would NOT have wanted to be a passenger when it came to a halt!! That’s what is called a SUDDEN STOP, I guess.. Still odd!

We’ve been there twice for a few weeks each time. At some level, we really enjoy place. The cacophony of everything (people, odors, foods, scenery, historical sites, forts, cities, temples)...Oh, India.

What the story fails to report is that the overwhelming majority of those deaths were people who were struck by trains while walking or standing on tracks.

About 200 to 300 people a year are killed in India by derailments and other accidents involving the operation of the trains themselves. That is actually not bad for a country with a population of 1.35 billion people who use passenger rail at a rate many times higher than people in this country. On average, Indian passenger rail carries over 23 million people per day. By comparison, Amtrak carries about 31 million passengers per year.

Ride their father’s magic carpet
Made of steel

Had to post that as IMHO one of the best lyrics written.

The book The First Frontier recounts how the native Americans of the Northeastern tribes where fastidious about personal hygiene, often bathing daily, unlike the Elizabeathen explorers they first encountered, who bathed yearly, if at all. It was as said that the Indians could track an English ship offshore by the stench alone.

From your source, “556 commuters (481 males and 75 females) died a natural death while travelling”.

So they just died of old age!

Actually its one of the safest in terms of passenger miles -- I believe they have more passenger trains than anyone else and over a billion people carried per year.

The trains are very safe, but slow and the distances are vast. Travel from Bombay to Bangalore takes like a day for 2000 odd km.

Water yeah, drink only bottled water and even brush your teeth with bottled water.

The numbers are mostly from people crossing the tracks, not passengers

Also look at the number of passengers the trains carry yearly
