Over 80 killed every day, seven days a week!
I'd question if our trains carried even 0.1% of the number of passengers so highway miles would be the nearest comparison.
Every so often, I will encounter something, not necessarily from India, but it presents a remembrance of all the unique smells of India.
From burning human flesh, to saffron, to curry, to open piles of human feces, dead dogs, live cattle...nothing smells like India.
Must of been one of them thar SUV trains.
Silver Streak.
From that source, 1651 morons died by crossing the tracks and getting hit by trains. Many died chasing after trains, and many were suicides. A large number died falling off of trains.
Stupid people do stupid things.
If I ever go into the perfume business, I shall name my first fragrance “India” — ad slogan: “Nothing smells like India”.
Another great one.
Bus accidents, trains, maybe ferries too, you hear about that from India, I’m glad no one was hurt, and in spite of all, they are classified as a “free country”. Good with the bad, they’ve been a civilization forever.
Don’t forget the electrocutions while climbing on top of the train. I won’t post video or gifs of that, but they’re out there. Truly horrific.
“Wow, I wonder if anyone ever thought about
a runaway train movie?”

Yes,
One of the funniest:
“The Silver Streak”
“A disaster was narrowly averted in eastern India Saturday after a runaway train carrying up to 1,000 passengers”
Must have had only 2 or three cars.
Indian trains are hideous - good thing they have such nice, modern accident-free roadways!
/s
> there were NO injuries.
That’s because they don’t have as many lawyers as the US.
That particular word invokes a vision or memory of what should be a pleasant smell.
The smell of India was anything but pleasant, but if one could bottle it...
Funny, though, of all the smells from India, the stench of unwashed human bodies is not strongly in my memory.
Now, most any place in Africa..., particularly Sub-Saharan...the smell was a solid thing...that you could almost reach out and touch, feel.
I remember my first wife...holding our 18 month old son, standing in the market and literally gagging from the smell of the women that had crowded around her to see the baby.
She was a trooper, but, man!...that smell was really bad!
I have to wonder, though. Indian trains, for all their shabby appearance, are run fairly well. They’re also a lot more manual than US passenger trains. I wonder if it was a problem with the locomotive, because if the train were just rolling out of control, every carriage has an independent brake wheel, and they could have just set the brakes on all the carriages. If the locomotive was still driving, though, that would be a different matter.
Indian train operators, engineers, etc., are the best in the world,
[nothing smells like India.]
Then add heat.

According to data released by the National Crime Record Bureau,
a staggering 27,581 people died in rail accidents in India 2014,
many of whom perished after crossing the vast swathes of tracks that
border communities, homes and villages.
