Los Angeles County wants to help build guest houses in people's back yards ... for the homeless
Los Angeles Times ^ | April 11, 2018 | Gale Holland

"Not in my backyard" protests helped block homeless housing in Temple City, delayed it in Boyle Heights and, last month, killed Orange County's plan to relocate homeless people to shelters.

Now, Los Angeles officials want to turn NIMBYism on its head — by paying property owners to put houses for homeless people in their backyards.

In August, the county Board of Supervisors approved a $550,000 pilot program to build a handful of small backyard houses, or upgrade illegally converted garages, for homeowners who agree to host a homeless person or family. Then in February, Bloomberg Philanthropies awarded L.A. a $100,000 Mayor's Challenge grant to study the feasibility of backyard homeless units within the city limits.

Rents under the county's pilot program would be covered by low-income vouchers, with tenants contributing 30% of their incomes. The county is also sponsoring a design competition, streamlining permits and providing technical aid and financing options.

The ‘tenants’ will contribute 30% of their income-—

-The Tenants are HOMELESS!!!! WTF !!!!

WHAT INCOME??? The live on handouts from the Feds—the state—and churches. They do NOT have ‘income’. Many panhandle-—but there is no way to verify even that amount of ‘income’.

I used to live in So Calif. Lot was 62 x 125, house was set back from street. I certainly could NOT have placed another ‘house’ in my back yard-—even if I wanted to do so.

I cannot imagine a single homeowner who is paying monumental taxes who would give up their patio or pool area to put a homeless person into the back yard. I certainly would not & the county could NOT pay me enough-—no matter what.

There are over 50,000 homeless that Los Angeles will admit to. I think it is much more than that. Why would anyone put themselves in danger & have no more privacy by having another ‘house’ in their back yards.....occupied by people who refuse to go into shelters already in place & paid for by taxpayers.

Maybe they should start with Maxine Waters’ back yard. But then she has bodyguards. Most other Los Angeles homeowners do not have bodyguards.

This is a nasty pipe dream. Someone has some new ‘schrooms’ on the County Supervisors board.

I taught real estate law and econ for 10 years at the college level. All my students understand supply and demand in the real estate market. I have the solution for the housing supply problem in California -— SEND 5 MILLION PEOPLE HOME WHO DO NOT BELONG IN CALIFORNIA.

But there is a caveat. Values and rents would go down and the foreclosure rate would certainly increase. In addition, lower values mean less property tax. But I think I would risk the consequences to get rid of 5 million illegals.

They won’t live in the desert because they need to be near those intersections where they hold their signs and make $350 a day from patsies. And then they need the liquor stores and casinos and fast food joints to spend their $350.

Build no guest houses. Instead go down the registered Democrat list, and put lawnchairs and tents in their backyards.

The Democrat households shall provide free wifi to the homeless tents in their backyards.

Funny how if they had decided to build a guest house on their property for family members, they likley would have been fined big time and been forced to tear them down - but to bring the unclean into the neighborhood, they will pay for it.....can’t make this stuff up.
