The 10 Best Alien Films Ever Made
PJ Media ^ | 12 Apr 2018 | Lauren Spagnoletti

What is the first thing you think of when you think of an alien movie? Does Sigourney Weaver's bald head pop into your mind as you picture her battling extraterrestrials in Alien 3? Or do you think of something unconventional, like Cloverfield or District 9? The alien genre is one that has certainly evolved over the years as special effects and computer-generated images have improved far beyond anyone's wildest dreams. But the fact of the matter is that for an alien movie to be good (actually, for any movie to be good), it has to tell a really good story, have character development, and be entertaining. Even the most beautiful film can be terrible if you just don't care about the people (or aliens) that you're watching.

Here are my picks for the best alien movies—for various reasons—dating back to 1982. I don't believe that older necessarily means better, but I also don't believe that higher budget means better either. See what you think.

I’m streaming Netflix’s Lost in Space now - very, very good IMO. Better than I expected

Just started watching this series. Nicely done. Good ensemble cast. Good plot. Big budget effects.

Alien Covenant....

Alien:Covenant was terrible. Dumbest spaceship crew ever, and the old trope of the android-gone-bad.

Prometheus I liked....

I’d have to buy one used. Not smart enough to build one.

What about ‘Tremors’ (1990)

Any list without Forbidden Planet is useless.

I thought of Tremors but are Graboids the aliens there, or are we?

..........the assumption that aliens from another planet will have some superior intellect.

If there is some superior intellect “Out there” it would naturally promulgate over time to such an extent that it was no longer superior but just a matter of fact.

The Mel Gibson movie, Signs. Half drunk bottles of water on the bedside table can come in very handy in case of an alien invasion.

“Men In Black” and “Independence Day” were basically spoofs, and shouldn’t be on the list. My favorites include 50s classics like “The Day The Earth Stood Still,” “Target Earth,” “Forbidden Planet,” and the original Gene Barry version of “War of the Worlds.”

Certainly not the best, but by far the scariest alien movie of all time:

‘Signs’ had a good message in it. One many most likely missed.

"I love that movie because it makes fun of the assumption that aliens from another planet will have some superior intellect."

I read a short story, decades ago, in a series of books called "There Will Be War." The story was about a civilization that attacks earth and is utterly defeated by the humans in short order. In the story, most civilizations quickly discover faster-than-light travel and rapidly move on to exploring their galaxies, but humans were stuck on stupid and instead sharpened their war fighting skills; so when the aliens attacked us they were basically using 16th century weapons and tactics, with their only superiority being in space travel. The story ends with some captured aliens realizing they had just handed the secrets to space travel to the most warlike species in the galaxy.

Not sure, but as for the movie me and the wife drag it out once a year and have a good time watching it.

This is about alien movies, but I thought the 1960’s TV series “The Invaders” and the Obama-era version of “V” and “Falling Skies” were alien TV classics.
