According to the article, the family had been robbed several times before. Their response was to get a gun for each parent. Based on the article, it sounds like the family, like a lot of civilians, had no real plan for what they would do in the event of another robbery, perhaps assigning talismanic powers to the mere purchase of guns.
For one thing, why wasn't the mom carrying? For another, why was the mom's gun and magazine not already assembled and ready for fire. And why weren't the 16-year-old kids armed and ready to provide backup fire?

"...robbed or attempted break-in five times since 2015..."
Wow, sad news for this family. Very unfortunate.

Leaving out the firearms-related aspects, why weren’t the kids noting down things like car make and model, color and license plates? A $300 point-and-shoot camera with 40x zoom would have gotten enough detail to nail down the make and model, and perhaps the plates as well.

This family exercised its 2nd amendment rights too late! They should have been getting range time for a few months or years...having a gun isn’t enough, planning and training needed.
I hope they catch these extortionist thugs’
Now I hope Mon and kids keep the restaurant and get a little range time. If one of the NYC Tongs come to Raliegh to get these murderers, the perps will die slow, tortured deaths.
Asian lives matter.

Any thoughts on how this family could have done better, if they were able to retrace their steps?

Had to be other Asians. They deal in cash as we have learned.

(urope. Why do they put up with this.)

"...why werent the kids..."
Because kids are horrified and in terror when their parents are getting gunned-down in their suburban driveway.

No description of the perps. It’s as if the Herald doesn’t want them to be caught.

Shooting in the face could be to send a message to someone. I did not see a description of the perps.

Hong Zheng, 42, died Sunday night in his Hope Valley North driveway just before 11:15 p.m. Zheng owned the China Wok restaurant on South Roxboro Road near the Kroger and off Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.
...
Not a single description of the perps anywhere, so they aren’t Asians.

“Because kids are horrified and in terror when their parents are getting gunned-down in their suburban driveway.”
They’re 16, not exactly toddlers. If you’re old enough to hand a disassembled gun over to your mom, you’re old enough to be manning a scoped AR-15 to provide overwatch as your parents, the family breadwinners, are trying to make it home safely after an exhausting 11-hour day at the family restaurant. They had been robbed half-a-dozen times previously. The correct response was either to not resist or overwhelming firepower. They chose a middle course and paid the price.

Headline is deceiving. Easily could be read that the wife and kids were shot dead.

The gun was not ready to fire. They bought it, and for ‘safety’ kept it unloaded.
You keep the gun loaded in the house. Period. I’m sorry these people got bamboozled into their situation.

"...not toddlers..."
You posed several questions of why the teenagers didnt do this, that, and the other tactical things.
My insight is they were likely behaving like typical North Carolina high school sophomores and not necessarily living in Code Red status.

There’s a 99.99% probability that the perps were black. That’s just the way crime stats roll.
