Europe can no longer rely on US to 'protect' it: Angela Merkel

Europe can no longer rely on the United States to protect it, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today, urging the bloc to take its destiny in its own hands.

"It is no longer such that the United States simply protects us, but Europe must take its destiny in its own hands, that's the task of the future," she said, after US President Donald Trump left traditional allies scrambling by ditching the landmark Iran nuclear deal.

Europe has absolutely nothing to offer if the US homeland is attacked because if we are attacked it would be from the air since none of our enemies, Iran, China,Russia or NK will be able to get their troops here because their troop ships will wind up in the bottom of the Atlantic or Pacific before they get here. Europe has no technology to defend us from a missile attack. Meanwhile thru NATO we are committed to defending them from a troop invasion threat with both our troops and technology from Russia immediately contiguous to them.Time to downgrade them from friend status to arms length acquaintances and send them a bill.

Poor Germany...they are overrun already and have committed suicide. Retribution 70-75 years later?

Why would America spend any of our “treasure” to protect these useless people? Our young men and women are too valuable to waste on people who have thrown open their front door and invited the enemy in.

Close our bases and bring our people home they have been there too long.

If the EU is going to pretend to have a unified government transcending nationalistic interests, then it is the EU that must come up with a military, not Germany. Germany is certainly going to have to do its part; in fact, all of the members are, and the days of pledging 2% of their GDP to the common NATO effort and then reneging as a common matter of policy must end. Of the 28 countries in NATO, the U.S., Greece, Poland, Estonia and the U.K. meet the target. Germany managed 1.18% in 2016. So yes, Merkel is certainly correct that Germany must do better.

Mind you, this is not a commitment to spending that money on NATO, it's a commitment to defense spending overall, only some of which is earmarked for the common effort. It's supposed to be a group effort, not the employment of mercenaries, but even if they're going to hire mercenaries they have to pay them. "When the money runs out, so do the Swiss," was the maxim of an age when the Swiss were among the best hired troops in Europe.

In fact, the U.S. providing 22% of NATO funding by itself is a relic of an age when Europe's protection was considerably more of a U.S. strategic interest than it is now, given the ending of the Cold War and the coalescence of the European countries under a common government which considers itself a full-fledged rival to the U.S. in every arena but the military. It isn't Trump who is being unrealistic here.

She’s right. There can be no doubt that we have few,if any, friends in Europe...so why would we shed any more than the billions of gallons of blood we’ve already shed there?

Translation of Merkel’s comments:

We must to more, like additional massive immigration of Muslims, to help the Middle East like us more, which will keep countries like Iran from threatening us.

If you are traveling to Britain stay in the touristy areas where being friendly is what they are paid for. Venture out and you will find the place thick with anti-Americanism.

I was told in no uncertain terms that once the EU has its own military we would be target number one, nice huh?

It will be a hundred more years before Europe or Russia can prosecute a war of any size.

I agree, but I found it interesting that these particular people actually supported the EU having a military for the express purpose of coming after the US?

It is mind boggling.

It would be even more mind boggling if those folks knew about the picture on post 46.

What percent of Europeans know about _that_? I bet it is under 10%.

Good,

Hopefully, they realize security is expensive.

You got to make choices, cradle to grave socialism, or be taken over by the mullahs.

It seems they have already made their choice.

The only military worth anything left in western Europe is probably the French. It’s hard to protect yourself when you are spending every dime on welfare programs.

If this is how Frau Angela feels then what’s the point of continuing NATO and pouring billions of dollars into it and US bases in Europe? Watch them change their tune with those US bases start closing. If they want us out, then by all means we should leave, but we should remind Hagatha that when the Russian Bear comes calling, don’t call us. I suspect the Bear will be beaten to the punch by Muhammad’s boys.

I couldn’t agree more. The emphasis should now be our relationships with the Central and Eastern Euro countries, such as Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, et al.
