The flowers are virtually identical when grown, as one of my old neighbors used to take advantage of and would grow them for opium tea. The flowers were red with black spots and looked identical to the paper Memorial Day ones. I never tried it but he apparently was solidly hooked.
Yes, they look extremely similar. You can’t legally buy seed for Papaver somniferum though.
