The Best Explanation for Our Spate of Mass Shootings Is the Least Comforting
National Revies ^ | 5/18/2018 | David French

On another terrible day, I hate to introduce even more pessimism, but when we discuss mass shootings, one of the first questions we ask is the simplest and also the hardest to answer. Why? Why does this keep happening? Those who advocate for gun control have an immediate answer — the prevalence of guns in the United States. Yet guns have been part of the fabric of American life for the entire history of our republic. Mass shootings — especially the most deadly mass shootings — are a far more recent phenomenon.

But Granovetter thought it was a mistake to focus on the decision-making processes of each rioter in isolation. In his view, a riot was not a collection of individuals, each of whom arrived independently at the decision to break windows. A riot was a social process, in which people did things in reaction to and in combination with those around them. Social processes are driven by our thresholds—which he defined as the number of people who need to be doing some activity before we agree to join them. In the elegant theoretical model Granovetter proposed, riots were started by people with a threshold of zero—instigators willing to throw a rock through a window at the slightest provocation. Then comes the person who will throw a rock if someone else goes first. He has a threshold of one. Next in is the person with the threshold of two. His qualms are overcome when he sees the instigator and the instigator’s accomplice.

This sums it up pretty well. It is Guliani's "broken window" theory.

The writer needs to pull the historical data on this. School shootings sadly go back to the late 1700s in the US.

They peaked in 1970 and then began a downward trend until the mid 2000s when they began to tick back up.

2014 was the second highest year (IIRC) for school shootings.

Part of the problem is that we crowd kids together in schools, categorize them by age although they often have nothing in common at all, and keep them there for 7 hours, herding them from place to place, diminishing their ties with family and neighbor to replace them with peer groups that are very large and very compressed, and we do this till they are 18, which is way too long.

We need to repeal the child labor laws, let kids drop out at 14 and work if they want to, and stop trying to teach them so much that they don't want or need.

When conservatives take back our country from the idiot libs, school shootings will cease.

When we treat schools as seriously as we do courthouses, airports and federal buildings, school shootings will cease.

[[first questions we ask is the simplest and also the hardest to answer.]]

It’s only hard for those who are in denial- liberal progressiveness is to blame- period- liberal progressiveness makes everyone a victim- causes everyone ot feel that THEIR feelings are more important than anyone else’s- that their opinion is the only one that matters- liberal progressiveness causes young people to lose all respect for their elders and authority, and even their fellow students/friends

liberal progressiveness is a terrible disease, and we are seeing the result but the left are trying to blame everything else but the actual cause- liberal progressiveness!

Fascinating theory - like a slow-motion anarchic riot in process since 1999. And picking up speed.

I know....right?

I pulled data from Wikipedia for this under school shootings.

I was kinda surprised to see as many as I did prior to the 1990s.

Liberals have normalized extreme hate and violence.

(ANTIFA, the Berkely anti-speech riots, etc.)

Now there is a big surprise that people are acting out their hate with extremely violent acts.

“The writer needs to pull the historical data on this. School shootings sadly go back to the late 1700s in the US.”

I find that statement hard to believe, due to the lack of public schools in this country at the time period you mention. Do you have a source for your claim?

II Timothy 3

But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, [a]haters of good, 4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to a form of [b]godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.

My late father was a “hired man” from the age of 11, working on other families farms to send money home to his large struggling family during the depression. He did that until he joined the CCC and later the Marine Corps.

A good source is “Crowds and Power” by Elias Cannetti

His work explains a lot

Let me retract that. I just pulled the data again and got a different result. When I get home I’ll confirm the numbers.

"Mass shootings" or mass school shootings?

For the latter, I'd say that teenage girls don't give teenage boys ribbons of participation when they reject their dating advances.

THE OBAMA YEARS-—WITHOUT A HINT OF SCANDAL (SNORT)

Broward school shooter Nikolas Cruz was for years a veritable parade of red flags.

<><>Twice the FBI failed to follow up on alarming tips – when Cruz vowed on social media “to be a professional school shooter.”

<><> local police made 39 trips to his home because of violent and erratic behavior.

<><> Even his schoolmates knew he was nuts.

Yet the 19-year-old (A) passed “background checks,” and, (B) legally purchased the rifle he used to kill 15 students, a teacher and a coach.

Bleeding heart Obama weighed in by monetizing the “hands-off minorities” program for which Broward collected $53 million federal dollars.

The braindead NAACP also weighed in to protect minorities....thus, aiding and abetting the massacre.

Where are you getting your data that mass school shootings peaked in 1970?

I have not seen it. Wikipedia attempts a list of mass school killings. From 1927 to 1990, there were seven.

From 1990 to 2016 there were 14 (now a couple more to 16)

That increase took place after the federal gun laws were put in place.

Many things could change.

No mandatory high school if working (but only five years after primary ed becomes the 1930 version of primary ed again), and 8th and 12th grade pass/fail state exams. Boot Camp schools for the non-medicated disruptives. Ramp schools for non-English speaking children requiring English mastery. Vouchers.

Serious national food- and video (games, porn, ‘reality’)-induced behavior discussion including our Surgeon General. Corporal punishment by parents and teachers again (with limits). Reopened mental institutions nationwide with school wings for behaviorally-medicated children.

Institute public stocks and caning for misdemeanors and lesser crimes, and public hanging for capitol rimes. Mandatory military service.

Guess I’m an old harda**.
