SEAL who shot bin Laden: Don't wish me a happy Memorial Day
Fox News ^ | 5-26-2018 | Robert O'Neill

Don’t wish me a happy Memorial Day. There is nothing happy about the loss of the brave men and women of our armed forces who died in combat defending America. Memorial Day is not a celebration.

Memorial Day is a time for reflection, pause, remembrance and thanksgiving for patriots who gave up their own lives to protect the lives and freedom of us all – including the freedom of generations long gone and generations yet unborn. We owe the fallen a debt so enormous that it can never be repaid.

Memorial Day is a time to honor the lives of those who would rather die than take a knee when our national anthem is played. But they will fight and die for the rights of those who kneel.

This holiday is a time to think of young lives cut short, of wives and husbands turned into widows and widowers, of children growing up without a father or mother, of parents burying their children.

I am behind the lines in enemy territory, so I hear it all the time.

I would say: enjoy the Memorial Day weekend. A lot of good men died to give you that opportunity.

I wouldn't "wish" him a Happy Memorial Day. He isn't dead.

Now - my uncle who took a bazooka shot to the chest in Germany during WWII is someone who will be remembered for giving his life in service to his country.

It is all over the place here, especially advertising. “Happy” is not a word I use to describe the day. He has a point.

Same here.

We never wished “happy Memorial Day” to each other. I see them doing it on TV sometimes, but I always cringe when I hear it.

Memorial Day always had started with a visit to a cemetery to stop in front of relatives’ graves to say a silent prayer. If we all could pack into the station wagon to get there early, we’d actually catch a prayer service lead by a local pastor. In our family, it had always been (and still is) a day of solemn remembrance followed by picnics/fun later in the day.

My guess would be 30-35% do not know...

You are SO correct! Many would be horrified to know that when it was first celebrated in 1868, it was called Decoration Day because it was used to decorate the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers who perished during the Civil War. Now that the "politically correct" have decided there are no confederate Civil War heroes worth remembering, they surely would not approve of the origins of Memorial Day!

How can most young people know about the protocols ingrained in those of us who are older? They can’t as they haven’t had the history we share and they are not learning about that self same history in school anymore.

Most kids do not know much or anything about Pearl Harbor or the war in the Western Pacific. I am ashamed that I have not stood on street corners and recited the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Maybe we should all do it and interject a chapter from a decent history book between bits and pieces of the Constitution and Bill of Rights at appropriate spots.

Robert O'Neill has the Rep.Peter King syndrome.

He's never seen a camera he didn't like. Very un-SEAL like.

The so called “death “ of bin Laden has Obama written all over it. We were only told what had happened. We never saw a single piece of evidence to support his story. Why would I believe the account of a habitually lying enemy islamist?

Mr. O’Neill was there and shot somebody.

But how do we know it was really Bin Laden.

Everything got disposed of rather quickly, including a Muslim burial at sea(most muslims live in a desert).

And there was an instantaneous DNA test result!

Amazing considering DNA test results usually take about a month.

And we were nice enough to leave behind a wrecked copter with a top secret rotor blade assembly, which Pakistan then allowed China to obtain.

It also was never explained how a man like Bin Ladin with a known kidney condition survived more than ten years after Tora Bora, with no medical eqquipment in his room or house, in the middle of a Pakistani Army complex.

At the time, Trump had Obama on the ropes over his birth documents, and the ginned up pdf of his supposed birth document was being questioned.

This story put the birth cert story into the memory hole.

Maybe someday we will find out who we really buried at sea.

So Google is your God? That explains a lot.

Have you ever PERSONALLY heard anyone say “Happy Memorial Day” to another human being?

What rock do you live under?

People say it all the time and there are ads in the newspapers and signs wishing a Happy Memorial Day.

I heard it twice on the radio this morning.
