Locking guns won't do anything to save lives
The Hill ^ | May 24, 2018 | John R. Lott, Jr.

After Friday's attack at Santa Fe High School, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick forcefully told people of their “responsibility” to lock up their guns. We all want to do something, but everyone locking up their guns will cost more lives than it saves.

A locked up gun is no better than no gun at all.

Patrick’s remarks were immediately after the shooting and were related ONLY to the idea the shooter took unsecured weapons from his parent’s home.

Fog of War statement. Don’t read too much into this.

You merely need to insist any home invaders provide a 2 minute warning. It’s only fair, after all.

If you watch attacks and responses on YouTube, especially those by Active Self Protection website, nearly every interaction is over in less than 20 seconds, many in less than 10 seconds.

Yes, it certainly will save lives. It’ll save hundreds of lives, possibly thousands of lives every year.

Lives of thugs, killers, armed robbers, violent psychopaths, and terrorists.

The down side, of course, is that countless innocent victims will be condemned to a violent death.

Every year, I read about two or three year old children who shoot a sibling after finding a loaded, unlocked gun in the house. Many of these injured siblings are killed or maimed for life. I disagree with his very broad statement.

The individual gun lock safes, that only unlock at the owner’s touch or code entry seem pretty safe to me. And you keep it right by your side. We don’t keep our guns locked when it’s just us, but when little kids visit, we do. Except my husband’s concealed carry, which he almost always has on hi person.

Better solution.. lock up psychotic people instead of just throwing pills at them and making excuses and laws that force the rest of society to accept their insanity.

1. Carry all the time when awake. Child won’t grab it off you.

2. It is possible to sleep with a handgun in a belly band or leg holster.

3. It is possible to tuck an AR in under the covers next to you.

You can guard your gun and still be ready. If it’s locked, you probably won’t be ready in time if something happens.

When I was in high school, we had both access to guns and guns themselves. No mass high school shootings at all.
Mass high school shootings like we’ve been seeing are entirely owned by David Hog’s generation and no one else.

No mention of the Oklahoma City? Armed bystanders gunned down a shooter Thursday at an Oklahoma City restaurant, killing him, police said.

If I ever see the need to lock a gun, it’ll be locked to my wrist.

...Every year, I read about two or three year old children who shoot a sibling after finding a loaded, unlocked gun in the house...

NRA kids gun safety Eddie Eagle program teaches kids to do this if they come across an unattended gun.
STOP!
DON’T TOUCH IT.
LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY.
TELL AN ADULT.
This should be taught to all children.

I'm in California, and you have to lock up your guns if children are present. I have a gun safe in my nightstand, it unlocks with my palm and fingers typing a combination. Very simple and fast. Also unlocks with a key, which I never use. My long guns have a trigger lock which is a pain because a key is necessary. I hate the law but it does keep the guns safe from my grandkids.
