Roseanne’s Firing Is Not a Free-Speech Issue
National Review ^ | May 29, 2018 | KATHERINE TIMPF

ABC had every right to dump her, and political correctness was not involved. In case you haven’t heard, Roseanne Barr did something really awful and stupid on Tuesday morning.

In a now-deleted tweet, Barr made a racist comment about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, saying that she was like the “Muslim brotherhood and Planet of the Apes had a baby.” A matter of hours later, her hit ABC sitcom was canceled.

There’s no denying that what Barr said was racist, or that she was dumb for having said it. She has since apologized, and has probably also reached the conclusion that it wasn’t worth it. In all honesty, I’ve never understood why people aren’t more careful on social media. I’ve always sarcastically said that the best thing about Twitter is that not only do you not get paid for your tweets, but you can also get fired for them. It really is one of the more idiotic ways to ruin a career, and I can never make sense of it whenever it happens.

But what’s done is done, and there’s no turning back. She was fired, and she deserved to be fired. Her comment was racist and unacceptable, and I would not want someone who had made that kind of comment representing my company, either. It really seems that simple to me, but oddly enough, I’ve actually seen some conservatives defending her — saying that her firing is an example of the rampant political correctness that flies in the face of free speech — and honestly, this is something that I just can’t understand.

First of all, this is in no way a free-speech or First Amendment issue. The First Amendment protects us from facing consequences from the government over our speech, not consequences from our peers or our employers.

Oh come on! The whole escapade of Barr’s tweet was choreographed and staged as a way to have an excuse for cancelling the program. Barr is known as a media impostor who will work for anyone who pays her - witness her bungling the Star Bungled Banner national anthem in 1990.

There’s no denying what she said was TRUE!

And can say or think whatever the Hell she wants, I don’t care, this is America, and we are free.

I wouldn’t listen to his advice, he wants somebody other than Trump in 2020.

Valerie Jarrett is not a former Obama advisor. She is a current Obama advisor who has been shacked up with Obama in a house in DC since the election.

It’s still called America, but this is not the country we grew up in.

Excellent post.

I never understand why Conservatives writers always appear so eager to hold hands with Liberals to look down their noses and lecture us. Why is it that Liberals never, ever seem to have a similar inclination towards self reflection?

She’s a Hollywood loon who happens to not be liberal.

Still a Hollywood loon and not worth listening to.

Poor taste is not the same as racist.
I think Valarie Jarrett is absolutely a Muslim Brotherhood sympathizer as are multiple Obama lackeys. She was a foreigner given the keys to the whole apparatus of the US executive branch. I think Rosanne Barr was right to call out this woman and the left wants to tear down anyone who would even approach the subject.

>>>There’s no denying that what Barr said was racist<<<

Because Barr should have known Valerie’s Daddy was a Commie loving Mulatto just like Obama.

I didn’t know who or what her Father was until yesterday myself and I think I’m pretty informed.

Thank you. I wish that people could step back enough, be objective enough, to understand that this is not about Roseanne Barr, who is not and never has been a conservative. It’s about the left’s double standards and hypocrisy. IMO, it’s also about, do we truly want equality, or is this about turning the tables? Considering the calls for white genocide from college professors which pass by without being called out, I know what I think it is.

And yet liberals do it all the time with impunity and justify the behavior.

Roseanne wasn’t fired for saying something racist - she was fired for being a Trump supporter and they’re trying to crucify him by proxy

I'm offended that Roseanne Barr compared Valerie Jarrett to Apes. Apes are beautiful creatures with a complex social system that provide protection against predatory cats, dogs, and hyenas. Mothers provide a strong bond with their babies, and nurture them to adulthood.

Valerie Jarrett is a nasty, gun-grabbing, baby-killing Marxist.

Roseanne didn't get cancelled because of what she said, she was cancelled because of WHO she said it about.

News flash for many on this thread: Likening an African American person to an ape is considered racist. You may not believe that, but it is true. And contrary to what many on FR believe, VJ is African American. Yes, she was born in Iran, but she is AA. Yes, Bill Maher should have been fired for his Orangutan rant, but Rosanne’s likening blacks to apes is still considered racist. Some of you need to get out more.

So Kathy, are you saying that all Iranians look like chimpanzees?

Agreed...She jumped the shark. It’s also not a free speech issue, a private company can absolutely decide Roseanne no longer benefits their brand.

But let’s just all agree.... you cannot call someone of African descent a monkey... EVER. Anyone asking why, is shamefully and woefully ignorant of our history, which includes making fun of African people by portraying them as apes. BTw: NO one is stating this is against the law.. it’s just very bad judgement, and whatever repercussions follow are justified.

What’s even sadder is her show was addressing bias and stereotypes that many people have towards groups, and humanizing everyone. Because let’s face it, everyone has these biases...
