The current brouhaha ignores one of our fundamental rights, the freedom of expression (speech). In its 1989 decision, Texas v Johnson, the Supreme Court ruled, Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.
The court determined that publicly burning the American flag was protected speech. It would surprise and shock conservatives to learn that Justice Antonin Scalia sided with the majority opinion.
Rather than condemn the athletes kneeling during our nations song, we should celebrate the absolute right to that discordant idea. Such provocative conduct in China, North Korea or Russia would find the contrarians in prison or dead.

Most NFL stadiums were built with taxpayer money, even after in some cases the voters rejected tax increases (Pittsburgh for one; I’m sure there were others)
The next time you want to burn your trash, leaves, etc. just say you’re exercising your right to free speech.
Sure, they have an absolute right to protest (within the rules of their place of employment). And I have the right to neither watch nor care.
