NJ governor sees guns, not shooter's early prison release, as the problem

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy responded to Sunday's deadly shooting at a Trenton arts festival by calling for new controls on guns. But a suspect’s gang membership -- and early release from prison after Murphy took office -- may have been bigger factors in an incident that left one person dead and 22 wounded.

Meanwhile, Murphy -- a first-term Democrat in his first elected office -- supports shorter sentences for offenders and cuts in prisoner rehabilitation programs.

The suspect, identified as Tahaji Wells, 33, opened fire before 3 a.m. at the Art All Night festival in New Jersey's capital city, in what appears to have been a gang-related dispute. Wells was reportedly killed by police, and 17 of the 22 people injured reportedly suffered gunshot wounds.

“What, law-abiding taxpayers not fleeing NJ fast enough for ya, Murphy?”

I look at people fleeing New Jersey like ancient history. “I fled New Jersey during the Corzine era.”

New Jersey is rated as the third highest state for percentage of sociopaths. While not a state, the District of Columbia is at the top. Then Connecticut, California, and New Jersey.

"...the Art All Night festival..."

Tahaji obviously did not see the merits of cubism.

I used to reserve use of the pejorative term “Doofus” for the sole description of Bill Clinton.

I think I’ll begin to use if for Phil Murphy too. What a doofus

"But it turns out that Wells had been released from prison in February, despite receiving an 18-year state prison sentence in 2004 on an aggravated manslaughter conviction in the shooting death of a 22-year-old man, NJ.com reported."

Let me guess. The NJ prosecutors and the judge arranged for the charge and sentence, as well as Wells' later conviction for in-prison crimes, to not interfere with Wells' ability to pass a federal background check. So that way, when Wells went to the store to buy his gun he passed the background check.

Apart from the multiple murders, and the racketeering charge, Wells faithfully obeys all laws. So adding a new firearms law that says "discharging a firearm after midnight in an art festival is illegal" and "all art festivals shall display a sign stating that shooting after midnight is illegal" and of course requiring all people hosting an art festival to get a background check should prevent problems like this in the future.

***people in NJ will never figure it out!***

I am reminded of an old SNL skit in which the people of NJ are considered brain dead or retarded because of pollution there.

When I worked in South Jersey, it always amused me that the toll bridges were set up so that you entered NJ for free, but had to pay to leave.

One thing for sure: people in NJ will never figure it out!

That's a little presumptuous of you isn't it? In-fact, many of us have figured it out a long time ago and have circumstances like ailing parents that keep us here to care for them. And when those elders are no longer of this earth, existing plans can then be executed and my family can escape the state.

You might want to re-examine your narrow perspective before you make such a ridiculous statement.
