WILL TRUMP TOPPLE THE AYATOLLAH? Barack Obama pursued the fantasy of a U.S.-Iran alliance and sought to build up Iran as a regional power.
Trump has sought to weaken them both externally and internally.
This Reuters report suggests that he may be succeeding far better than I, for one, imagined:
Mounting pressure from the Trump administration combined with discontent among many Iranians at the state of the economy are rattling the Islamic Republic, with little sign that its leaders have the answers, officials and analysts say.
The rail hasdropped 40% in value. Odd that this hasnt been more widely reported:
The rial has lost 40 per cent of its value since last month, when President Donald Trump pulled out of Irans 2015 nuclear accord and announced draconian sanctions on Tehran.
These include an attempt to shut down the international sale of Iranian oil, Tehrans main source of revenue, a threat that has cast a chill over the economy. *** The full impact of Trumps withdrawal from the nuclear deal and Washingtons move to stop foreign countries from doing business with Iran, may not be clear for months.
Demonstrations against the regime continue in various cities around Iran. Reuters says that analysts and insiders expect the mullahs to weather the storm. Likely so, for now. But tyrannical regimes generally appear secure until the day comes, to the surprise of analysts and insiders, when the seemingly solid edifice crumbles, often with stunning rapidity. Thats something for the mullahs to think about. And in the meantime, the likelihood of foreign adventurism should be much diminished.

In contrast to Obama/Hillary advancing “Arab Spring”
I didn’t vote to make Iran great again. Toppling regime talk is neocon talk.
The Iranian people will topple the Ayatollah! Trump will be supportive of them
The Iranian people have hated the Mullahs with a deep and terrible hatred since they took over the government. These are NOT Muslim people. They are Buddhist, Zoroastrian, and Christian. Iran was an advanced western democracy before Carter threw them to the dogs of Islam. They will celebrate every day for a year when the monsters are finally overthrown.
Same old, same old. Nothing ever changes.
Very Stable Genius
VSG =’s “Very Stable Genius”.....
So you were ok with letting them blow up our boys in Iraq with IEDs with impunity
Ok bert, I’ll bite, why?....
Would not be surprised if Jarrett was the architect of this fiasco. She was born and spent her childhood there, she might have a soft heart for the place.
It amazes me that you can have an ultra modern tolerant Muslim country right next door to one still in the 7th century.
Every iranian I have met have a strong affinity for anything European. They see themselves as more European than Middle Eastern.
“They see themselves as more European than Middle Eastern.”
Persians are European, and they know it.
Persia became “Iran” in 1935. Iran is the Farsi word for “Aryan”, and it was because of the then-Shah’s admiration for Nazi Germany.
Well that was the group most recently known as the M.E.K. and we had them completely under our thumb in Iraq. All the neocons were in love with them because Israel was feeding them planted intelligence aimed at convincing the US to attack Iran. The CIA didn't buy any of it though and the US State Department eventually convinced the Iraqi government to send them all back to Iran. I expect they're probably all hanged by now.
That's because Persians are Aryans, not Semites. The Azeris however, who make up about a third of Iran, are Turks. The Ayatollah is an Azeri BTW.
They’re already working on a region-changing peace deal re: Israel and the Palestinians in a much expanded context.
Trump has understood from the start in foreign affairs that apparently intractable problems can be addressed constructively if you expand the context. Playing up the economic carrot and stick has been fundamental to his diplomatica approach in each region he has looked at.
Why? I was looking for response beyond my thoughts.
While I do not know the historical forces at work, I believe it boils down to youth. Younger men with ambition have replaced the tired old fathers and uncles.
It’s true also in Singapore and Seoul and Shangi and the Pearl River Delta.
