Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on Thursday that President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin shouldn't hold additional one-on-one meetings until the administration details what happened during Monday's Helsinki summit.
Until we know what happened at that two hour meeting in Helsinki, the president should have no more one-on-one interactions with Putin. In the United States, in Russia, or anywhere else," Schumer said in a statement.
Talk of a second meeting comes days after the two leaders met one-on-one for two hours in Helsinki. Trump sparked widespread backlash during a press conference after the meeting by refusing to condemn Moscow's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
He then tried to walk back his comments on Tuesday saying he accepts the intelligence community's assessment that Russia interfered in the election but added that "other people" could have meddled as well.
Senators in both parties said this week that they were largely in the dark about what, if anything, Trump and Putin agreed to during their closed-door session.
Democrats have used Trump's rhetoric in the wake of the summit to question what deals the presidents might have made in Helsinki and if Russia has "damaging information" on the president.
"What could possibly cause President Trump to put the interests of Russia over those of the United States? Millions of Americans will continue to wonder if the only possible explanation for this dangerous behavior is the possibility that President Putin holds damaging information over President Trump," Schumer said earlier this week.
Despite backlash over the Helsinki, Trump has touted the sit-down as a success and signaled earlier Thursday that he wants to have a second meeting.
"The Summit with Russia was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media. I look forward to our second meeting so that we can start implementing some of the many things discussed, including stopping terrorism, security for Israel, nuclear," Trump said in a tweet.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Thursday afternoon that the president has asked national security adviser John Bolton to invite Putin to the United States.
"President Trump asked @Ambjohnbolton to invite President Putin to Washington in the fall and those discussions are already underway," she said in a tweet.
I thought Chuck would be talking about this being Nacho 500 Day. It,s been 500 days and Hillary is still NACHO President.
When Schumer warned not to mess with the IC because they had six ways to Sunday to get back at you, he forgot Russia has IC who can do the exact same thing, to anyone they want to.
Chuckie, as soon as we get the details of the secret agreements actually enacted in the Obama/Iran deal. Remember when you demand Obama disclose them? Neither do I.
We still never got answers to where Obama and Hillary were when the Benghazi terrorist attack happened (did anyone from the Republicans ever demand an answer to that????), so tell Schmucky to answer that first and the to STFU.
No one told Schumer he does not make U.S. foreign policy???
Somebody will posts every dam article that that POS rag prints.
The dumb bastard doesn’t get a vote on this.
Where does this putz get the chutzpah?
Schmuckey has as much say in this as my neighbor’s dog.
The Russian spies are paid to spy by their country, Russia.
It’s what they do to put black bread and meat on their families’ dinner tables.
The Russian spies almost certainly read Hillary’s State Department era e-mails.
And the Russian spies probably craved more.
They hoped Hillary had an additional e-mail address.
They also hoped Hillary sent additional e-mails to high level domestic Democrats.
The Russian spies first had to find any other e-mail address Hillary might have used.
A good place to look would be the DNC, so they did.
The Russians can spy without actually meddling.
The way we know the Russians spied is because the FBI and Obama and Mueller told us the Russians spied.
The Russian spies merely are trying to keep Putin and other top Russians well-informed.
We spend billions each year spying on the Russians. We probably don’t get to read Putin’s e-mails, but the NSA and CIA almost certainly do get nuggets of information.
Maybe Shmuckie should run for POTUS. lol
President Trump can do whatever he wants and talk to whomever he wants!
Schumer is way out of line.
I hope President Trump calls Putin daily!
Trump and Putin should have a meeting every Tuesday at 2 pm just to tick them off.
Senate Minority Leaders can make foreign policy? hmmmm
FOAD Schumer.
