WASHINGTON - California helped birth the nations electric vehicle industry. It used its laws and market size to prompt automakers to make and sell electric vehicles. It encouraged Tesla and other innovators to build manufacturing plants.
Over the years, California spawned an entire industry devoted to EV batteries, charging stations and utility collaborations, with billions of dollars invested.
Now, all of that is at risk. On Thursday, the Trump administration proposed freezing Obama-era rules that require automakers to build cleaner, more fuel-efficient cars, including hybrids and electric vehicles. The proposal would also challenge Californias authority to set its own greenhouse gas restrictions on cars, including a mandate that automakers sell a certain number of electric cars in California.
If the administration prevails, it could upend numerous California enterprises devoted to clean cars, some of whom are already reeling from market uncertainty.
On Thursday, the CEO of the nations largest EV charging network blasted the Trump administration decision, saying it will turn back the clock both on pollution reduction and U.S. competitiveness in electric vehicles.
California is the global leader in the mobility revolution, due in no small part to the states commitment to emissions reductions, said Pasquale Romano, CEO of ChargePoint, headquartered in Campbell, Calif. It simply makes no sense to revoke this waiver at a time when California leads the nations efforts to compete in the global marketplace.

Without those state and federal taxpayer subsidies, Tesla wouldnt sell half the cars they sell.
...
But you just said their buyers are rich. The end of rebates would hurt Tesla’s competitors more than Tesla.
I guess you didn’t see the latest news, read a recap of the conference call, or see the stock price today.
LAX-CLT; windfarms seemingly every 20 miles.
well then turn back the frigging clock. and fuch the crybullies it bothers.
I see what you mean now. I was confused because you capitalized “Smart Cars” so I thought you meant those little things you see once in awhile that look like a go cart.
Electric cars should achieve acceptability in cities where there is limited use for commuting and short trips.
Such cars can be acceptable if they are bare bones without lots of useless bells and whistles. .for the masses the perception of luxury is not required
Ah, there we go. 29th paragraph of a 30-paragraph article. Fourth sentence from the end.
“I like electric cars and would like one for local trips, provided it is cheap, cheap to operate, and easy to maintain.”
I like electric trains myself...HO gauge.
“On Thursday, the CEO of the nations largest EV charging network blasted the Trump administration decision, saying it will turn back the clock both on pollution reduction and U.S. competitiveness in electric vehicles.”
Excellent! Eat millions in losses.
Are Tesla Owners secretly pining for a F-250 4 X 4 Dually?
I drive a Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 Dually and i’m certainly not pining for a Tesla.
Tesla lost $718 Million in the last quarter, so their annualized loss is closer to $3 Billion than $1 Billion.
Exactly! First, a series of bankruptcies, to clear away any debt. Then, those “second mice” investors will swoop in, and eat all the cheese.
Nobody is saying they can’t continue to *develop* their little electric go-karts, it’s just that people should not be forced to buy them.
Like obamacare without the mandate, it will soon fall under its own weight.
Ironically, just today Tesla outpaced GM in market value. How much of that value is subsidized by taxpayers is a big question.
What are these violations?
“as battery technology and efficiency improves”
Remember (I’ve said this before) the more efficient a battery becomes, the more it becomes like a bomb.
Gasoline has a saving grace: it won’t burn unless it has oxygen. Gasoline has much more energy per pound than a battery and it is quite safe in a decent tank. Going down the freeway we are surrounded by gasoline and even the Obama administration didn’t see a safety problem there.
There arent enough of them to make a difference.
Yup. No one mentions the toxic environmental nightmare of expired electric car, car batteries.
Sure, just let the market decide. Always works.
And they should not be subsidized by taxpayers either.
