PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A number of Patriot Prayer supporters, including group leader Tusitala "Tiny" Toese, wore t-shirts at the Saturday protest in Portland that read: Pinochet did nothing wrong.

Who is Pinochet?

Augusto Pinochet was the leader of the military junta that overthrew Chile's President Salvador Allende on September 11, 1973. For the next 16 years, Pinochet was the head of Chile's military government.

Information from Brittanica.com

Thousands of his regime's opponents were tortured and during his nearly 17 years in charge he moved to crush Chile's liberal opposition. During the first 3 years of his regime, about 130,000 people were arrested.

"Pinochet was determined to exterminate leftism in Chile and to reassert free-market policies in the country’s economy. His junta was widely condemned for its harsh suppression of dissent."

I see the cucks have shown up.

The fault lies strictly on people like them for the last century of encroaching progressivism.

When I was in college in the 1980s, the Leftists there were screaming about Pinochet and I couldn’t figure out what the big deal was. So I went to the library, researched what was going on then (newspaper archives), and it was CLEAR AS DAY as to why the Left was so mad. They nearly had another Cuba, this time, in position to basically hand South America to the Soviet Union, and with that, probably the Cold War.

It was that close.

“He also used his office to embezzle, take kick-backs from arms dealers, launder money, and avoid taxes. “

And with that, Chile became the WEALTHIEST country south of the border. So your point is?

“Not any worse, Nor any better.”

How can you say that? Guevara fought *for* the forces of evil, while Pinochet fought *against* the forces of evil.

Killing communists to prevent them from establishing an evil tyranny is not morally equivalent to killing normals for the sake of establishing that tyranny.

Pinochet was a good man.

Odd to be on a site called FREE REPUBLIC, and be a cheerleader for that crap.

“I’ve often thought that America needs a Pinochet because of the Leftists creeps here.”

Don’t be surprised if it happens the next time the Left takes power, as it’s OBVIOUS now that they have no room for dissent or handing over power peacefully.

It will either be a Pinochet-type coup and purge, or a very bloody civil war.

China is a rich nation too.

Xi Jinping did nothing wrong......right?

The American colonies were well-off too.... Why be so sore about George III, guys?

“Good for the Patriot Prayers! Pinochet was the greatest hispanic leader of the 20th century. “

Interesting on many of the posts here. You can how the Left has even infected the views of otherwise conservative people, who cannot seem to understand just what Communists do when in power, even given Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin, Norks, Cuba, and many others.

They come up with a Jimmy Carter type of ‘equivalence’ between our side and our enemies who want us ‘re-educated’, at a minimum.

Very sad. We have a VERY LONG WAY to go to turn education around so people (even on our side) can distinguish bad from good again.

Just remember; the British got rid of Winston Churchill just as fast as they could after VE day.
Some times “the people” do stupid things.

“He also used his office to embezzle, take kick-backs from arms dealers, launder money, and avoid taxes.”

Where’d you get that, from the Washington Post and other fake news filth?

He was a good man, an honest man, and those accusations are just lies from the left.

He gave fun helicopter rides.

We’re not quite there yet.

Give us Weimar problems, you will get Weimar solutions.

“China is a rich nation too...Xi Jinping did nothing wrong......right?”

Yep. They are rich because he LEFT PEOPLE ALONE to go into business and make money. They’re also rich because CERTAIN PEOPLE in this country cannot understand Communism well enough to see that they are a military threat to us.

You know, the type of people who hate our friends as much as our enemies. You must know...

“Not any worse, Nor any better.”

No, Pinochet was better. If nothing else, at least the ideas he fought for actually worked. Che killed people - innocent people - to achieve nothing of any value.

I am elated that the truth about Pinochet is being remembered on Free Republic. There is not a better place in the country where facts are given and people are given the praise they deserve.

His country would have become a larger Cuba. Is there a new Pinochet in all of South America?

The was no middle ground in 1973 Chile. Either submit to Soviet backed Marxism or support a strong man to completely remove it.

Make no mistake, Chile was a battleground of the west vs the spread of communism. Do you think the South Vietnamese and the US played nice with caught Vietcong and NVA. Pinochet wasn't the inventor of "helicopter rides."

It's a shame the so called conservative right doesn't have the same disdain Marxism, maoism or socialism in general as it does Nazism. The only reason I can conclude is that the right loves it's own brand of socialism.

“Very sad. We have a VERY LONG WAY to go to turn education around so people (even on our side) can distinguish bad from good again.”

Back when Pinochet was in office, fake news was all the news there was. People got taken in, even when they were trying not to.

How many people still think Ferdinand Marcos was a bad guy?

Still a dictatorship where there is no real freedom, where any dissent is met with you vanishing off the streets (like what happens in Hong Kong), and they are doing well economically.

Not hush up and praise Xi Jinping because that’s what we are supposed to do.

The gold in your pocket must help to comfort the feeling of the boot on your neck.

This is not addressed to Mariner, but you other guys really don't know what you're talking about. You're just regurgitating the leftist narrative that has smeared Pinochet unjustly for decades.

re: He was a dictator that we helped install, that stayed in power for years past whatever the hell he was supposedly saving Chile from. The first chance Chile got, they got rid of him. Not exactly the mark of a “hero” in the end.

Flatly untrue. Pinochet saved Chile from a communist takeover, put market reforms and economic policies in place that started Chile on the road to becoming the economic jewel of South America, and then VOLUNTARILY stepped down and reinstated free elections. Do some research from sources other than wikipedia.
