I think about 1966 was pretty good.
Long hair and hippie lifestyle and psychedelic rock and the rest made “straights” beat up guys with long hair and then SDS and antiwar demonstrations fought the straights. Vietnam did it, of course.
The real turning point for me was black violence and feminism, so 1967 and 1972. Never back together like Humpty Dumpty.

IMO, secession is the only peaceful solution. Barring that, there will be another civil war eventually. We have two “tribes” who have radically different ideas about how to live which are completely incompatible with one another and who do not like each other at all.

I will take back what I said. There was a second time when the country came together again, left and right, for a very brief moment. It occurred immediately after 9/11. That was something to see, and it did make me proud to be an American. But it didn't last very long.
So, no, I generally disagree with your premist that until Barack Obama that liberals and conservatives were at least civil to each other.
