Chuck Yeager weighs in on 'First Man' flap: 'That's not the Neil Armstrong I knew'

Hollywood’s portrayal of astronaut Neil Armstrong in the biopic “First Man” was quick to elicit the attention on Friday of aviation legend Gen. Chuck Yeager.

Social media platforms lit up before the weekend as news spread that Ryan Gosling’s latest film does not include the American flag being planted on the moon. Critics fretted that “First Man” would essentially turn Mr. Armstrong into a progressive caricature when Mr. Yeager, 95, weighed in.

“Ryan Gosling is coming out with the movie First Man where it portrays Neil Armstrong as a liberal progressive anti-Trump (in spirit) non-flag waiver,” a user identified as @ClarenceSwirly wrote. “Probably agree with the National Anthem kneelers, too; at least in Hollywood’s liberal imagination. For your Info.”

“That’s not the Neil Armstrong I knew,” Mr. Yeager...

People on the airshow circuit say that Yeager is actually a total a$shole, BTW.

I think you have him confused with John Glenn, who was a certified one.

That sounds like there is a possibility that Welch did it first but the odds favor Yeager.

Seeing the name, Bob Hoover reminds me that he was the one who described Yeager as “the best”.

Interestingly, in his book, Yeager said that the guy they call “Ridley” had waxed him in a mock dog fight.

I saw an interview with another famous test pilot who said Yeager was the best “stick and rudder” man he had ever seen.

My understanding is that those in the business pretty much agree that Bob Hoover was

Pardon me if I take the word of a man who broke all sorts of aviation barriers* over the word of someone who tried it in video games only (and probably had to use up all his extra lives to do it!)

*AND knew Mr. Armstrong in person

Exactly right, I remember.

In 1961 JFK stated we’d land on the moon within the decade and we did.

We were determined to outdo the Soviets even though some were skeptical.

Planting the flag on the moon was a BIG deal!

Exactly. Williams whole shtick on Adrian Cronauer was “If we’re all nice to the Vietnamese and play baseball with them they won’t want to kill us, or their freedom-loving countrymen.” “Oh, and flowers and stuff.”

He’s signed thousands of autographs for free. “Total Aholes” don’t do that.

I've heard, and observed both actions. At a speech at Air & Space, he was very pleasant and did give an free autograph to my son. He can be very funny, as well.

I was at a car show and fun race with the old cars. There was a famous racer that was signing autographs for $5. My son and I waited in line for just a little bit, got up to him and the guy standing behind him said “Mr. blank has to take a break now, but come back in an hour.”

He was old so I cut him a break. Of course now I can’t even recall his name!

I still remember when I was a kid in the Cub Scouts and my dad was the Cubmaster. We had Andy Stynchula, who was a defensive lineman for the Redskins at the time give a talk. He signed autographs afterwards and I was being polite and letting the other kids go before me. When I got to the front of the line, he said he had to leave and never signed it. I will never forget him and will never think highly of him.

On the other hand, at an Eagle Scout get together, I got both John Glenn’s and Ed White, Sr.s, autograph. Ed White actually signed it Ed White, Jr., which I found very sad. It was a picture of him walking in space.
