Harvard Prof: Merit-based admissions 'reproduce inequality'

Professor Natasha Warikoo claims that white students "reluctantly agree with affirmative action as long as it benefits them”

She's displeased that students she interviewed are motivated by "self-interest" instead of social justice

A Harvard University professor claims in a new academic study that merit-based admission processes at elite universities “reproduce inequality.”

Harvard education professor Natasha Warikoo draws on interviews with 98 white, native-born students at Harvard, Brown University, and the University of Oxford in “What Meritocracy Means to its Winners: Admissions, Race, and Inequality,” published in the journal Social Sciences.

White students “stand in fear of being labeled a racist, but they are quick to call foul should a diversity program appear at all to hamper their own chances for advancement,” Warikoo claims in that book.

During interviews Warikoo conducted between 2009 and 2011, these students were asked to sound-off on whether they felt their school had meritocratic admissions and if they supported affirmative action. Many answered the second question affirmatively and hailed the benefits of a diverse student body.

But Warikoo seems concerned with students’ responses. Analyzing data from these interviews years later, Warikoo points out that students’ approaches to diversity suggest that they’ve “internalized” the tokenistic rhetoric of the school admissions office, even if they had disagreed with policies like athletic recruitment or legacy admissions before coming to campus.

Merit-based admissions PRODUCE quality or at least a likelihood of quality. How do we improve the quality of the inputs? In a quality manufacturing process, we don’t simply fix deficient inputs. We change the processes by which the inputs are created so that they are of good quality. We must make some very hard choices in improving elementary and secondary education.

Those with high relative “merit” see that as a reasonable criteria to evaluate students in a competitive world. Those without merit would prefer race and politics. Warikoo’s “study” showed that students are hypocrites who pursue their own interests, just like those with low “merit”. Who’da thunk it? Ps: the racism behind her pursuit of “equality” would embarrass David Duke.

My theory: in science, engineering, and medicine “merit” makes all the difference in the world, ultimately in life and death terms. Defining merit and grooming talent are important, but incompetence will lead to systemic or spectacular failures.

In soft/arbitrary fields such as Warikoo has experienced, “merit” is tangential because results often do not matter, except in some abstract, academic sense. What difference does it make if the “Marxist Critique of Merit” or “Dialectics of Form: Labor and Gender in the Unpublished Fragments of Ben Jonson Poems” are pursued by illiterate morons or the brightest, hardest working students? By all means, admit the duds to social programs, and steer the achiever to STEM.

If you’re a businessman and you’re tired of losing a little money every year in your business, just hire a brilliant young Harvard or Wheaton MBA.

Soon, you’ll be losing TONS of money—nobody can create disasterous losses better than one of these geniuses.

Democrats are just as evil today as when they backed slavery.

Worse, because they have had a century and a half to learn better.

I suspect that given the choice, this broad would choose a doctor to perform surgery that wasn’t let in because of Affirmative Action, over one that was.

And merit based hiring of faculty would … oh, never mind.

Merit based admissions, which “reproduce inequality”, are racist according to this individual. IOW, he’s admitting to believing that minorities are less capable of achieving merit than others. So, who’s the racist?

True social justice is the best, most qualified candidate gets the job no matter what they look like. Not the best minority candidate getting the job.

“Professors” like this need to be driven into the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Nonsense! The wilderness has enough trouble already... she should have Mexican gang affiliation marks tattooed all over their body and then she should be driven across the Southern Border and left there with no money and no ID. Looking at her picture, I am sure that there are old Mexican men or "sex tourists" from Asia, Africa and the Middle East who could help keep her from starving.

Oh, I forgot along with the Mexican gang tattoos she should have the base of her tongue injected with Botox to help keep her quiet. Otherwise, no matter what she looked like the Mexicans would immediately blast her back across the border using their big human reject cannon.

“Professor Natasha Warikoo claims that white students “reluctantly agree with affirmative action as long as it benefits them” “ Additionally, when did affirmative action ever benefit white students?

When they are female. Or a member of the gaystapo.

One of the reasons the Harvard faculty chased Larry Summers out of a job was, among other things, he was trying to revamp Harvard's academically lackluster School of Education.

This snowflake justice warrior seems to be intent on outdoing the Ed wackiness at Columbia.
