We’ve had racist presidents, but I was commenting on the Founders and their thoughts as they put the Constitution together. They obviously believed in property. They left it out. Clue, or not clue, to their fundamental beliefs about other races? We can only speculate.

As for your other point, I’d prefer it if we called all of it “racism.” There’s the big part of the iceberg that’s below consciousness, too, and that can be the worst because even the holder can’t see it. It all needs to go.

Accusations that are merely political in nature, such as saying white milk is racist, just hurt the whole cause.

It will happen because it’s happening. I have seen huge changes in my lifetime. It will truly be gone soon.

But the problem is, the unseen part of the iceberg is beyond anyone’s control, including the man with these unconscious prejudices. It can be worn away in time with experience and getting to know different people. But these damned leftards deal with all of it as if it were the virulent, vociferous type, as if anyone with a MAGA hat got caught on his way to a lynching, and the founding fathers supposedly were, too, because they owned slaves. That’s due to a pointed refusal to differentiate between the soft bigotry of ignorance and inbred attitudes, and the hard core, drag-em-to-death-by-a-chain-from-your-pickup racism. A MAGA Trumpist is neither sort of bigot, at least not usually. The founders inherited their attitudes and their respective stations in life, and they did the best they could to improve themselves and their society under adverse circumstances. But when you start spraying a room with a shotgun, you’re bound to hit someone who’s guilty of something. And in the minds of these twisted antifa types, they feel vindicated by the violence they commit, and by their wholesale rejection of the founders and the constitution. Mr. Booker is the end product. G-d help New Jersey.

The proper phrasing is not attempted assault - he was assaulted. The proper phrasing is attempted murder.

“During the incident, Fazeli allegedly pulled out a switchblade knife and attempted to stab Peters. The knife malfunctioned and the candidate became involved in a physical struggle with Fazeli, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly.”

The brute! The racist!

“The suspect then fled the scene, but was detained a short time later by deputies and was found in possession of a switchblade knife, Kelly said.”

“Fazeli was arrested for felony assault, criminal threats, brandishing a weapon and possession of a switchblade knife and booked into Santa Rita Jail.”

“The proper phrasing is not attempted assault - he was assaulted. The proper phrasing is attempted murder.”

Now now now. We don’t want to disqualify Mr. Fazeli from owning a gun, do we?/s

We have one of the Starbutts down near the Interstate 20. We have a Java Joe’s local coffee shop here on the square near Jacksonville State University. We drop by the local folks place and they make about everything that the ‘butts do and have the snacks to go with them, so we don’t even miss the Washington state liberal ahole Shultz’s lousy tasting burnt coffee.

“Yes, there must be some, but I’ve never seen a quality folding knife made in Pakistan.”

Agree with that. The knife I bought required finding a 15-inch leather sheath and lots of saddlesoap to make the knife fast on the draw.

In the early phase of feminism part 2, there was a lot of “consciousness-raising.” It helped. New words for things, and then a lightbulb would go on.

Our society needs that. We can’t just say anything unconscious is OK. It’s not beyond our control.

If you can’t find your way to being a Christian yet, read some Zen Buddhism, in which a white mare is the same as a black stallion. In fact, you’re not supposed to even see the difference.

Two things that should always be avoided:
Ridiculous imaginings of racism where they don’t exist, even unconsciously. Usually, political, by someone who is trying to be holier than thou.
Black racism toward white people.

Those are detours that will take us off the track and slow things down.

I wouldn’t say that unconscious bigotry is OK. We have a spider in our bathroom that doesn’t spin webs. It’s bigger than a silver dollar, and it cruises around the floor looking for bugs to eat. It looks scary, but it’s harmless. We don’t bother it. It doesn’t bother us. But we are not going to mingle socially. Do I have unconscious aversion to big, scary spiders who are always under foot? Maybe, but I don’t act on it by squishing it. The f@#$er’s too fast anyway, so can’t be squished.

Unconscious bigotry should not be acted on or embraced. But so long as it remains inert, it’s not real. I’m not a Christian, but there is much wisdom in saying that ‘by their fruits shall ye know them.’

As for a white mare being the same as a black stallion, the color is irrelevant, but there’s a huge difference between mares and stallions. Zen Buddhists weren’t much into riding, I think.

Just quoting a story of Salinger’s, where a man is sold a horse that is supposed to be strong, fast, fearless, and loyal, or something like that, and the buyer is told it’s a black stallion. When it arrives, it’s strong, fast, fearless, and loyal, but it’s a white mare. Or the other way round.

Unconscious prejudice is not inert, unfortunately. It has to do with subtle things like who you look at when you’re talking to a group of people, how you acknowledge people who are only there to provide you with a service, that kind of thing. You can’t fake it, or it looks fake. Like body language.

In fact, faking it is just about the worst thing you can do, because it’s not really treating everyone the same without having to think about it. No one wants special help. They just deserve to be part of the group, not just part of the background noise or scenery.

Don’t know why I am going on and on about this. I’ve been thinking and observing for a long time, though, and I guess I’ve learned a few things.

One thing I note about your observations: The law cannot force people to eschew their unconscious prejudices.

Affirmative action merely reinforces those prejudices and make them conscious. Making everyone go in for sensitivity training or conscious raising is a losing proposition. Those people that want to eradicate their unconscious prejudices will do so voluntarily and happily. Those that don’t want to be bothered and think it’s all ‘hippy crap’ and PC will resist anything mandatory and push back in the opposite direction.

The worst is the BLM and Antifa movements, which are dedicated to the proposition that anyone who voted for Trump is an outright racist and needs to be pummelled, stabbed at with a switchblade or even shot at for wearing the hat or being Republican.

People have to get to know one another to change their attitudes voluntarily, and all the government can do is facilitate that socialization process. It must be voluntary. That’s why ghettoization and segregation are so destructive. That’s why the evacuation of Ghaza was so destructive. Once it was made judenrein by misguided Jews, the Imams were free to demonize and scapegoat Jooos! to their hearts’ content, and there was no contact with any Jews to conteract that.

I don’t advocate laws for diversity. In fact, if you do something or don’t do something because of a law, you are not really doing it from your heart.

But it’s not enough for people to just get to know one another, either. There should be a certain amount of self-examination and prayer. We should hope and pray for that light to go on in our head and in our soul wherever it’s off.

I always find that the positive works better than the negative. Instead of thinking, “I will not be annoyed by people who are rude on the street,” I try to think “I walk in holiness everywhere I go and at all times,” goody-goody as that may sound. It works better. Every ignored rudeness is actually an opportunity to witness.

Without Jesus you can do nothing.

Introspection can only be recommended and encouraged, not mandated.

As for the racist presidents, while Lincoln reassured constituents of congressmen with tough reelection campaigns that negroes would always be regarded as inferiors, he freed the slaves, and stopped the slaughter of captured blacks by the confederates. Truman, while he used the N word on a regular and casual basis, split his party in 1948 by calling for anti-lynching laws, and signing executive orders calling for the integration of the army and forbidding discrimination in federal employment.

“By their fruits shall ye know them.”

It is not enough for people to just get to know one another, either. But without that, nothing is possible, and that is the most that can be done through the machinery of law.

Theologically, we can agree to disagree. But positive of course works better than negative, and an excess of legislation merely empowers lawyers and politicians to run everyone’s lives. Lin Yutang said that, who theologically disagreed with us both.
