The Scourge of ‘Diversity’ (interview with Heather Mac Donald)
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 12, 2018 | Jillian Kay Melchior

...

When it comes to race, Ms. Mac Donald’s views are more conventionally conservative. She argues that minorities could overcome economic and educational disparities by embracing “bourgeois values.” She opposes all forms of affirmative action, and believes admissions and hiring should be based solely on aptitude tests and objective measures of performance. She even opposes the University of California’s guaranteed-admissions plan, which admits the top 9% of students from every California high school, regardless of the school’s overall performance. The mechanism is a covert way to reintroduce race into admissions, she says, in violation of Proposition 209, which prohibits race and sex preferences in California’s public institutions.

But don’t students who rise to the top of mediocre or failing schools exhibit exactly the bourgeois values Ms. Mac Donald lauds? “Some of these schools—it doesn’t take a whole lot to be an honors student; you basically show up,” she replies. Even when disadvantaged students truly have shown exceptional work ethic, unless their test scores pass muster, “I think the mismatch is far too powerful a problem.”

That refers to the theory that preferences set up their intended beneficiaries for failure. They’re suddenly expected to perform beyond their proven capabilities and to compete with peers who earned admission through merit. This helps explain why universities may feel racially hostile despite the best efforts of admissions officers, faculty and administrators. Minority students may be excluded from study groups or chosen last for class projects because of aptitude, not race. “That’s heartbreaking,” Ms. Mac Donald says, “but if you come to a university with one or two standard deviations below your peers of academic qualifications, the gap doesn’t close.”

So without affirmative action, how can kids born into poverty and dysfunction ever escape their circumstances?

Well, sure these kids are almost guaranteed to flunk out. However, they make the college look more diverse than it really is, which may help the college Prez get a bonus. Even better, they pay tuition for a semester or two and help keep the college afloat. And they leave with student debt (that they will likely default on). So …… Mission Accomplshed!!

Either race matter or it does not. She is correct we need to get rid of ALL this race based crap. Even including getting rid of groups like the Black & Hispanic Caucuses.

...Diversity is an anti-religion, and anti-ideology, a nepotism which promotes everything except one's own family.

Diversity therefore equals the destruction of any and all religions and of all positive ideologies.

Because Diversity can only be destructive: whatever IS is insufficiently or inexactly diverse.

Whatever IS must therefore be destroyed in order to make it MORE Diverse.

And there is no conceivable or measurable end to it. Yesterday's Diversity is today's intolerable lack of Diversity.

Diversity is the destruction of Good; and it is the destruction of all types of Good - however defined. All are chewed up and spat out by Diversity.

Diversity is the promotion of chaos by the destruction of Good; and then there-naming of chaos as Good.

Race-based preferences are wrong, illegal, and unconstitutional. Any law that ‘permits’ them is invalid, and not binding.

Race-based privileges clearly state that the recipient is not competent to receive the intended benefit, and is being given the benefit in spite of non-suitability.

The point of Diversity is to allow democrats to infiltrate. Once on the inside, republicans would be pushed out. See Wynn resorts. See Tesla. The point is to take control of places that strong white men had built and owned. The Diversity promoters know that once they are on the inside they can eventually gain control. And at some point hand cash to the white men and take control of the organization. Diversity is a liberal strategy, its not an ethics issue. Diversity is not moral.

But what happens when different races do better than others? That is something that makes people too uncomfortable to face.

Diversity means fewer white people. That’s all it means regardless of context.

Diversity is what is created when competitive accomplishment and the effort, the desire/need, and responsibility to get there is removed. Then everyone is equal, but only at the lowest level of performance attainability. And it gets less competitive as time continues until the achievement means nothing as it is not useful for society and then man as it no longer is completed.

She seems confused as to how to prepare these minority students for college. The tragedy is our public school system. I teach many of these students, in a state college, and they just do NOT know how to read and write. I sent my kids to private school just so that they could read and write. Reading and writing does not take a lot of money, it takes dedication and hard work, correcting and rewriting bad essays. Why don’t our public schools have the same high standards as private schools? I’ve seen plenty of mediocre private school students, but they survive because they have learned to read and write. But the unions in control of the public schools do not support the work required to actually teach these students. And what kind of a future do these college kids have if they never learned to read and write well? It’s not a pretty picture.

Bingo. I teach at a community college and you have hit the nail on the head. The kids do not know how to read and write. Reading comprehension is a massive problem. I teach history and there is a English prerequisite to take my course but you would never know it to read the essays I see. I can understand the foreign students, English is not their first language but native English speakers are writing at about a 3rd grade level. Earlier this week I spent time going over an essay with a student from Mexico who had scholarships to the university. She told me that I was the first professor who would actually go over her essay with her. I asked about her English professors and she said they just gave her high grades and told her not to worry about it. I give my classes open note, open book and open electronic device tests. Even with all those advantages the average score last semester was a C-. Reading comprehension is non-existent right now, and you’re absolutely correct, the fix has to be made at the primary and secondary level. If it is not, then colleges will soon be nothing more than a delayed high school experience.

I help Asian students, who have green cards, apply to colleges and grad schools. Today I was helping a Santa Monica Community College girl with her UC application essays. She has a 4.0 GPA at SMCC, but her essays, while having acceptable thought content, are extremely difficult to read because her grammar is so bad. How her English teachers in high school and JC could give her an A when she is being unable to write an essay is almost a crime. Her English teachers apparently didn’t want to spend the necessary time to teach her and the other students how to read and write. And they didn’t want the hassle of dealing with irate students, parents, and their superiors by giving out failing grades. It’s easier to simply give them a good grade and let them face reality (failure) later. In that way, it’s less work and everybody is happy...temporarily.
