The Elizabeth Warren Fiasco
NYTimes ^ | Ross Douthat

Posted on 10/17/2018 4:15:01 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

A lot of smart people believe that Elizabeth Warren, the senator from Massachusetts, is the front-runner for the Democratic nomination in 2020. A recent New York magazine profile by Jonathan Chait claimed that she’s winning the invisible primary — building campaign networks, rolling out policy proposals, wooing insiders, intimidating rivals.

*snip*

I am not a Democratic insider or a campaign professional, so for all I know Warren may indeed be impressing her intended audience.

*snip*

But running for president in the age of Donald Trump requires, above all, an ability to handle what John Heileman and Mark Halperin once called “the freak show” (back when it was considerably less freaky). It requires a deftness dealing with scandals and gaffes and accidental blunders, an ability to know when you have a wrestling move that justifies getting down in the mud and when you’re better off sitting on a top rail and acting superior to the pigs.

*snip*

[W]hat Warren should have done when the story resurfaced, what she obviously should have done, was to simply express mild regret for letting her enthusiasm for family lore carry her away into identifying as someone who might possibly receive affirmative-action consideration, apologize to Cherokee groups for any offense, and literally never speak of the matter again. And if and when Donald Trump started up his Pocahontas jibes, she should have simply ignored him and talked about the many issues where he’s on the wrong side of public opinion.

Right. And why is Harvard being sued for discrimination by Asian Americans?

"White privilege" is just another Liberal construct to divide us and keep minorities on their plantation.

I get all that. Tribes define who is and is not a member. In MA, it was an issue a few decades back when the Mashpee wanted tribal status. It was questioned because the tribe has so much European in the bloodline. That seemed like a weird argument because Portughese, Scandanavians (and probably others) got to New England and tribes absorbed them, way before the Pilgrim settlement. Can minute "indian blood" be because of shared European DNA? Who knows?

It’s good that people know an Indian nation has disavowed her.

So far Warren’s main encounter with the freak show has involved her claim to Cherokee ancestry, which was an issue in her last Senate campaign, in 2012, before Trump started in with his nicknaming. And from her initial response to the story through the new DNA test “rebuttal” to the president, she has demonstrated a conspicuous lack of political common sense.
What's happened to the liberals is they've coasted all these years unchallenged. They yelled "Boo!" and the Bush-league Republicans scattered and ran for the tall grass.

Now, for the first time, they have an opponent who not only fights back, but draws blood (politically speaking). In addition, he says things which, while frightening the pearl-clutching Bush-league Republicans, gets the liberals to respond in foolish ways that expose their hypocrisy, and more importantly, forces the liberal media to carry his message - which they'd prefer to hush up.

In addition, some of the Bush-league Republicans are now feeling their oats, energized so to speak, and responding in kind to the liberals.

Genius.

"So far, if you believe the MSM, Biden appears to be the front runner. Ironically, that’s simultaneously easy and hard to believe based on the state of the Democratic party."

No, it's very easy to believe at this stage that Biden is the front runner. He has just about 100% name id recognition at this point. If you look at any front runner poll a couple years out it is almost always based on name id recognition. It's hard for us to believe, but large swaths of the public don't follow this as closely so when asked they pick the name they know. This person rarely gets the nomination though.

You are on the right track with the state of the party. It's going to be a real dyed in the wool lefty in the Bernie Sanders mode. Unfortunately for Bernie, he's much too old and pale to be get the nomination given the current state of the Democratic party. It will almost have to be a minority or a woman or both based on how they are going.

One prediction I will make though is that the Dems learned from the pubbies last time. They will not clear the field for any candidate. They will let the candidates fight it out and have 20 candidates up there for a debate on TV, just like the pubbies had 16 at one point. That will be must watch TV as they try to all veer towards Marx/Engles/Lennen et al... you know old dead white guys.....

Her Democrat fans are going to have to think long and hard about whether they really want her taking a debate stage with Trump.

Does Creepy Joe realize that if he gets the nod, those many pix of him getting handsy with little girls and other men’s wives will be all over the internet?

I don’t think he does.

Ancestry status is just Royalty revised. Ethnicity is a nebulous term.

When people say they are this or that I say BS, because only very broad generalizations can be made. Are you darker or lighter? That is it.

Quit trying to compete with the real Nazis who tried and failed to define ethnicity. Go measure the size of your nose if you wish. Lol.

Real Indians ended with the first introduction of horses, steel or the written word. Modern people are NOT Indians.

Reservations should be disbanded. Move into the modern world. Every group wants privileged status. They want Royalty so YOU can be their slave.

No, they won't. Why do you think Google and Facebook are working triple-overtime to build the infrastructure for internet censorship?
