WEST ORANGE, NJ – A lengthy discussion between Llewellyn Park residents and members of the West Orange Township Council ensued on Tuesday as five residents spoke about what they viewed as excessive taxes at a time when many residents are aging and finding it harder to either maintain or sell their homes.

The council was set to discuss a proposed resolution to approve sewer and road improvements in Llewellyn Park.

Please note: The US government considers me to be from New Jersey.

They voted for this. It serves them right.

If it keeps them from moving to another state and destroying it with their politics that is even better.

No sympathy.

I have a Facebook friend who lives in NJ who complains about this all the time. They can’t afford to live there anymore because taxes and everything is so high, but they can’t sell their house either. She was a big lib Bernie supporter who then turned into the biggest Trump supporter after Hillary stole the primary.

You see that happen even in comparatively low tax jurisdictions, for instance North Carolina. There’s a nice small town near me, great parks, beautiful historic district, should be very desirable but their municipal tax on top of the county tax is off-putting to buyers to the point that it takes much longer to sell a house within the municipality compared to a similar house out in the county with only county taxes, and they sell for a lower price. So, sellers need to drop their price to compensate for the greed of their taxing authority. They get nailed coming and going, annual property tax, depressed sales price and likely an outsized tax on the sale itself. Stop voting for such excessive government largesse, if there’s any place its painfully obvious, it’s residential real estate taxes across the board.

I’ve heard that house prices on the east coast can be deceptively low because of the outrageous property tax burden.

Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, yes. They're almost as bad as Texas.

We have high property taxes in WI . My husband and I vote against public school referendums year after year, and always get out-voted by idiots who like higher and higher tax bills. The margin is usually 2/3 for and 1/3 against raising taxes.

We moved to a lower taxed county this summer after 20 years in the higher taxed county. Getting way more house and land for our money now. Got out of libtard Dane County (where Madison is-home of crazy liberals).

“no matter the price of housing..the state will just jack up the percentage or some other trick to get the same and more for falling house prices/values”

This happened to us in northern Virginia. After housing prices went down around 2010, and the assessments fell, they upped the property tax rate so that the revenue stayed the same. Of course, they didn’t repeal it after house values started to recover. And then to add insult to injury, the loons here elected Wexton, one of the tax scam’s planners, over Comstock.

Go figger.

East of Orange.

I was born there and lived there for 5 years. My parents both graduated from Clifford Scott High School. It used to be a lovely community but had massive white flight in the early 1960's and by the time I got old enough to travel back there on my own it was a terrible place to live. Has it gotten any better?

My Grandfather used to go to Llewellyn Park to tune some pianos. Thomas Edison used to live there and it was always a place for the very wealthy.

My wife just fixed it on the phone.
I didn’t ask her but I signed a paper in the past that says she can speak for my taxes.
Turns out they were missing 2016 and made an estimate while my wife was sitting in jail.
Basically I got robbed. psssh.
But after all the bs this year I am just happy to limp into the new year with my debit card in hand (which will work in a few days).

So let’s review. 1) your wife is in jail. 2) you gave up on the money you had coming to you. 3) your debit card might work in a few days, maybe.

When I lived in Central Jersey, my property taxes were 15k for a 2800 square foot house on a half acre of land. I furnished the basement making the house 3800 square feet. The assessor wanted to increase my taxes by 5k a year for the extra living space. Told him it was my company headquarters and I want tax relief since I have employees who work there. (My accountant was working with them. Turns our we didn’t have to pay anything. Good accountant)

In spring of 2006 I sold my house for 600k. A week later the housing market crashed.

I have a friend in upper New Jersey. He pays $14,400 in property taxes on a $600,000 home. That is insane!

All by design.

The idea is to capture you there as an eternal taxpayer, simply because you can’t afford to pick-up and go anyplace else.

Big Four consulting firms are advising Illinois to do this ON PURPOSE.
