A report said that fecal matter was discovered on every McDonalds self-service touchscreen swabbed during an investigation in the United Kingdom.
Samples were taken at six McDonalds locations in London and two in Birmingham. The samples all revealed a contamination of coliforms, which are found in human fecal matter.
We were all surprised how much gut and fecal bacteria there was on the touchscreen machines. These cause the kind of infections that people pick up in hospitals, said London Metropolitan University Dr. Paul Matawele, according to The Metro.
For instance Enterococcus faecalis is part of the flora of gastrointestinal tracts of healthy humans and other mammals. It is notorious in hospitals for causing hospital-acquired infections, he stated.
Customers first choose their food on the screens before heading to the front to pick up their meals. Often times, they dont wash their hands or wipe them down with hand sanitizer, the report suggested.
At one branch, a screen was found to have Staphylococcus, or staph. According to the U.S. Food Safety website, some strains can cause food poisoning when a food handler contaminates food and then the food is not properly refrigerated. Other sources of food contamination include the equipment and surfaces on which food is prepared.
Matawele told the paper: Seeing Staphylococcus on these machines is worrying because it is so contagious. It starts around peoples noses, if they touch their nose with their fingers and then transfer it to the touchscreen someone else will get it, and if they have an open cut which it gets into, then it can be dangerous.
He noted that there are fears about Staphylococcus becoming more resistant to antibiotics.
However, it is still really dangerous in places like Africa where it can cause toxic shock, he said.

yep
Switch to ground pork burgers.
They also Wade through the urine on the floor then stand on the toilet seat to take a dump.
Grocery carts are a huge concern. Lil chilun poop and pee while sitting in them.
Carry hand sanitizer and clean your hands after using the touch screen if there is no easy access to a washroom. Better yet, carry latex gloves and wear one when using the touch screen, then use the hand sanitizer just to be doubly safe.
but this is on the outside of the screen. Not the inside ;)
And to be TRIPLY safe, disinfect the touchscreen with a flamethrower before using it.
Oh Gawd, so gross.
Anything public is going to have some degree of contamination, if not fecal matter, then drugs. It cannot be helped. Money in particular.
Touchless public restrooms really help. But compared to households, they are but a drop in the bucket. Everyone simply needs to wash their hands.
Now on the other side of the coin, if we get too pure there goes our immune system.
I’ll have a McFecal with fries, please.
A guy i know carries several pairs of jersey gloves with him when he goes out and changes them throughout his errands of the day, then just dups them in the wash on the weekend.
I get it: evil, job-stealing kiosks bad. Hey, I have an idea. Why don't they go down to the nearest upscale restaurant and test the menus.
I did water treatment at USAF drinking water locations where I took BacT samples. These samples were taken from taps where the water was chlorinated and never failed a test.
I watched the guys handle those 5 gallon cooler jugs. They removed the cover, grabbed the neck of the bottle with their bare hands and put it into the cooler. So I started testing them and most failed. The solution? Stop testing water coolers.
Sounds like a dumb guy.
I remember one time my job had me writing from scratch and speccing out a touchscreen checkout system on cafeteria type food service. Told them that they should get the anti-microbial touchscreens, justification “less liability”, but the response was “nah, too expensive”. They were about an extra grand or so back then.
And people wonder why I don’t shake hands...actually am thinking of reviving wearing little gloves
Nothing is every 100%. But I at least make some effort.
I will shake hands if offered.
I’d be willing to bet a lot that one would find the same on just about any public touch screen sampled. At McDonald’s? Consider the patrons.
Right. You have to watch out for yourself. And you have to draw the line somewhere.
I probably wash my hands a dozen times a day at least, but I work in Healthcare, and that is a valid place to be doing it. You just have to in order to prevent patients from picking up infections while in the hospital.
Sometimes I think all the allergy stuff we see is due to this obsessive thing with hand wash, cleaners and such. Getting exposure to stuff (to a degree) is important to keep your immune system strong.
To a degree...
Hahahahaha! I’m taking that!
