The Wizard of Oz is a grotesque predictor of Trump’s America
The Guardian ^ | 3 Dec 2018 | Bidisha

The Wizard of Oz is such a classic film that I don’t remember the first time I saw it. It seemed to be on TV every Christmas during my childhood and became a part of my cultural education, a formative film language. A new study claims the film, which went through a staggering run of directors, writers, songwriters and script edits during its production, is the most influential film ever. I don’t know about that, but I frequently rewatch it to study how great film-making can make any story fly like a wicked witch’s monkey.

Judy Garland’s performance as Dorothy is a wonder of innocence, sensitivity and determination. At the start of the film, she wonders what lies over the rainbow and then, in a concussed dream, enters the rainbow. The combination of imaginative anything-is-possible scale and picaresque narrative style is totally cohesive, so that what could have been a discordant riot of songs, set pieces, production design, acting styles and plot somehow barrel along together, from the special effects of the tornado scenes to the twinkling transformation into Technicolor, to the sinister and deliberately fake-looking malachite-green art-deco sets of Emerald City. Then there’s the surging music, in which every group song increases in volume and hysteria until there’s a kind of bullying mania to it.

In my opinion they made her up to look like every pedophile director's dream. She was hardly Little Nell.

I forgot to add that 1984 is an accurate predictor of the leftist’s UK.

I once read that the writer of the book was a “hard money” believer, and opposed to the creation of the Federal Reserve. Hence, “follow the yellow brick road” was meant to promote a monetary gold standard.

Hey, at least its more believable than anything the Guardian has to say.

Shame on you! Any decent person would understand the phone book is terribly discriminatory, putting all of the A's at the front and the Z's in the back of the bus. /sarc

The wizard was only incompetent, and he acknowledged the fact. Further, he arrived in power accidentally. Whereas— obammy was a deliberately- destructive enemy agent whose arrival into power was an organized very clever plan ( Muslim dictators, sorozNazi especially as the puppetmeister in Chief—— all well known but since that same evil conspiracy is still active and still has billions and billions of dollars it can continue to buy immunity from prosecution and purchase any number of political hack puppets, cobgresscritters, abd government agency operatives - as well as most of the mass media propaganda organs).

Indeed. She’s been quite testy after that house fell on her sister.

Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first person she meets and then teams up with three strangers to kill again.

Gross. What is a “Bidisha”?

Something that Russians keep in their bathroom in lieu of toilet paper.

Mr. Redhead was full-blooded Czech. He grew up and went into the army with a friend whose surname was “ZVANOVEC.” (Zvonovets) Talk about being last in line for anything...

I don't know what the experts say, but I've tended to view TWOZ as having a New Age message. To me, the Wizard himself represents traditional religious beliefs or notions of God, which are treated as illusory; God is a sham. The message seems to be that we already have in ourselves all we need for fulfillment, if we can just tap into it and bring it out.

Before I get slammed, I want to emphasize that this is my interpretation of the movie, not my own beliefs. Of course, I can also be slammed for my interpretation of the movie.

Frank Baum must have been an early utopiaist. In the books, he described how the princess Ozma of Oz was transformed into a boy as a baby. Then around the age 10, this boy was transformed back into a girl and was happy about it.

She’s in United all of the countries into a single world government where she was ruler of all. She banned the use of magic of anyone in the world except herself because only she could be trusted with magic. She used her magic to know exactly what every subject of Oz was doing at any time in the world. The only ones in the world that were not really subject to the same rules were the talking animals.
