The United States stepped up its criticism of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro on Saturday with an explicit call for the formation of a new government in the South American country.

The U.S. State Department said in a statement that it stood behind the head of Venezuela’s opposition-run congress, Juan Guaido, who said on Friday that he was prepared to step into the presidency temporarily to replace Maduro.

The statement was the latest in a series of Trump administration attacks on Maduro, whose inauguration to a new term as president on Thursday has been widely denounced as illegitimate.

“The people of Venezuela deserve to live in freedom in a democratic society governed by the rule of law,” State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said. “It is time to begin the orderly transition to a new government. We support the National Assembly’s call for all Venezuelans to work together, peacefully, to restore constitutional government and build a better future.”

Maduro will claim that the statement is proof of a coming U.S. attack to steal their oil and he needs more power to protect the people.

There was a time in our history when we wouldn’t just talk about it, we would make it happen. Those day are long past I guess.

They voted for Hugo Chavez and communism. Let them suffer the consequences.

The only ones who should be let out of Venezuela are the ones who can prove they voted for the opposition. All the others must stay in the utopia they created.

I think 13 countries do not recognize Maduro as the legitimate President.

IIRC, over 123 Countries do recognize the legitimacy of Maduro’s Presidency. It is hard to find anything about this in English Speaking Press.

Instead of worrying about Venezuela, how about the same rights for We the people. Maybe, it’s a hint to We the people to take back our government.

None of the Latin American leaders came to Maduro’s fraudulent “inauguration.” But guess who did send a representative and his congratulations....that’s right, the one and only Francis the Marxist Fool.

I wish Republicans would take opportunities like these and show people why socialism is a failure.

Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua and Uruguay are recognizing Maduro’s second term.

"attacks on Maduro"

Incredible. State Dept calls for end of brutal, murderous dictatorship. But because its a LEFT-wing one, the media DEFENDS it against "ATTACKS" from the world's oldest democracy.

I thought Sean Penn and Danny Glover and Woody Harrelson were heading there to run things.

Well, the commies are, of course, but the others are not. And then there’s the New Communist Vatican State.

I thought the State Department, as useless federal employees, were on enforced vacation albeit with delayed pay.

Do you want to stay in Syria and maybe do some other nation-building while we’re at it?

Venezuela is in our back yard, we already have tons of escapees we are dealing with but they are largely self-sufficient and a great burden. We done have a history of trying to nation build in Central/South America, Also I don’t suspect that Trump would engage in a never ending intrusion there. Maybe you need to understand what’s in our interest & what isn’t. Syria isn’t and Venezuela is.
