Frontal Lobotomies: a Darwinian Mental Health Holocaust

1-22-2019

by Jerry Bergman, PhD

The frontal lobotomy was a psychosurgery treatment based on the evolutionary belief that, as the human brain evolved, the newer sections evolved on top of the older parts. The evolutionarily older brain section was later called the ‘reptile brain.’[2] A lobotomy, the theory postulated, could reduce undesirable ‘reptile’ behavior.[3] In the end, as many as 35,000 persons were lobotomized, producing what neurologist Frank Vertosick called “a mental health holocaust.”[4] We now know most patients replaced their reptile behavior with a sluggish, disoriented, even moribund, countenance. Some were reduced to vegetative states, and many died of cerebral hemorrhaging or other complications.[5]

"The ‘triune brain’ concept then popular among Darwinists proposes the “forebrain comprises three separately evolved and to some degree independently functioning cognitive systems,” said Carl Sagan in 1977, showing how Broca’s Darwinian view continued unchallenged into the 1970s.[10] It proposed that the three brain levels are, the innermost brain was the reptilian brain, next the paleo-mammalian complex (the limbic system), and last, the putative more evolved neocortex, the higher-level brain.[11] These “three quite different mentalities” each had its own memory, motor abilities and emotion control, corresponding to a separate major evolutionary step.[12]"

"Freeman’s most famous case was 23-year-old Rosemary Kennedy, the oldest sister of the former American President, John F. Kennedy. She underwent a prefrontal lobotomy in an attempt to control her sometimes extreme emotional outbursts. After the surgery, Rosemary was left with the mental capacity of a toddler, unable to walk, or even follow simple directions. She never recovered.[23]"

I notice that none of the vocal proponents of frontal lobotomies ever decided to have it done to themselves to PROVE it, though...

Just sayin’...

It should be appreciated with great humility that nobody understands how the human brain really works. It is known that the brain is 90% phospholipid. However how those fats up there churn to generate the higher intellection functions such as memory, speech, insight, sight, thought and all the higher intellectual functions remains unknown. It is the great scientific challenge of the new millennium. Until it is understood when politicians, psychologists, professors, physicians and others impressed with their own credentials pontificate loudly on various methods to alter human thought, be skeptical and in general run.

The Soviets used to do that to political dissidents in their “psychiatric hospitals”. They used an ice pick through the corner of the eye socket to do it.

Because, well, you know, AYONE that doesn’t agree with communism/socialism is, like, you know, crazy, after all...

AOC would agree...

Psychiatry and medicine and public opinion has moved on to replacing vaginas with penises and penises with vaginas, and psychology and pop culture is telling the brain that it is all healthy, wholesome and good.

We’ve known this for many decades...and, yet, so many doctors and nutritionists have been pounding the table about a low-fat diet. Geez, that goes a long way toward explaining why the Democrats are doing so well - dain bramage caused by inadequate fat intake.
