RIVERSIDE, Calif. The firearm used in the deadly Riverside, California, shootout was an untraceable AR-15-type weapon assembled from separately acquired parts, commonly known as a ghost gun, a law enforcement source told CNN on Thursday.
Ghost guns are firearms manufactured without serial numbers, making them difficult for law enforcement authorities to trace, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Gun parts can be ordered online and assembled at home, the ATF said.
Riverside Police only describe the firearm as a possible semi-automatic rifle, spokesman Ryan Railsback told CNN. It has not been sent out to the crime lab yet for evidence collection or ballistics testing, and has not been evaluated by the California Department of Justice or ATF for retracing (its) history.
Authorities say Aaron Luther killed California Highway Patrol Officer Andre Moye and wounded two others in Mondays shootout in Riverside. Luther, an ex-convict, was shot during the exchange of fire and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Moye was shot after pulling over a vehicle near I-215 and Eastridge Avenue. He managed to put out a call for help, which brought officers from CHP, Riverside Police and the Riverside County Sheriffs Department to the scene, who exchanged gunfire with the suspect.
Moye served as a CHP officer for nearly three years and was assigned to Riverside after graduating from the CHP Academy in 2017, a release from California Gov. Gavin Newsoms office said. Moye is survived by his wife, parents, and siblings, the release said.
It is not known whether any parts of Luthers gun had specific manufacturer markings, according to CNNs source.
Los Angeles has seen an increase in the number of ghost guns, the LAPD said in a statement released in 2018. Detectives often recover ghost guns, particularly in the form of semi-automatic 9mm pistols, at various scenes of criminal activity, according to the LAPD.
Ghost guns are particularly useful to individuals who are banned by police from owning traditionally purchased guns, allowing owners to sidestep the legal system requiring gun registration, according to a Utah State University paper published earlier this year.
Its not known how many ghost guns are in the US today, though one regional ATF office in California obtained 250 ghost guns in 2017 alone, the paper noted.
So the push for Red Laws would not have stopped this......................but the left will keep pushing.
hasn’t traced it’s history... but knows it is a ghost gun... sounds dramatic
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (AKA “The Bureau of All Good Things in Life” ;-) requires that all AR-15 lower receivers have a serial number, the manufacturer’s name and so forth.
The lower is supposed to be mailed to a Federal Firearms License dealer, and ONLY to the FFL, who then fills out the proper paperwork and does the other stuff that makes it possible to track the lower. At least, that’s what I understand.

I hate Velma.
Yeah, but this will lead to a ban on companies selling individual components; or at least a call for one. People who don’t know anything about firearms will support it in droves.
There are parts you cannot buy unless you are an FFL holder. Typical Lying, Dying Fake News Liberal Media - NO Lie They Won’t Tell. Just like they told us “Plastic” Glocks couldn’t be detected.
I like Velma.
I believe you can order an 80% lower and with some tools, complete the last 20%.
Liberal politicians calling for a ban on ghost guns in 3... 2...
People have been making untraceable firearms forever.
They have been routinely *not* included in counts, because they cannot be traced, and have no serial number, so they are never counted as having been “traced”.
At one point, I think in the 1970s, the D.C. police revealed that 15% of the guns they confiscated were homemade or “ghost guns” to use the current parlance.
This is a push to make it illegal to make your own guns.
Almost certainly unconstitutional under the Second Amendment. It has almost never been illegal to make your own guns in the United States. There have been a few exceptions for felons, or to make commercial arms for sale without a license.
But generally, it has never been illegal to make guns for your own use.
Since 80% lowers are readily available, and don’t require any special actions to purchase, right now, California should prohibit law abiding citizens from possessing or owning one. That will definitely prevent criminals from using them in crime.
Unlike plain old stolen and illegal guns with intact serial numbers which always get registered and never "sidestep the legal system."
As the perp is an ex-con, he should not have had access to any firearm anyway, n'est ce pas?
I do wonder just how many gun laws were broken by the perp. This is an important question, as the Dems want increasingly oppressive gun control, while we responsible and legal gun owners continually try to make the point that law breakers, being the law breakers that they are, will gladly break gun laws.
The only part that needs to go thru an FFL is the lower receiver, which has a serial number. Other than that, everything can be ordered on line, delivered to your door, or purchased at a store. To get the lower, you need a NICS/background check.
Only way this thing is a “ghost gun” is if the lower was made in a 3D printer, out of polymer(same kind of polymer for Glocks, etc) or somewhere, someone has a CNC machine, the programming and blocks of metal to manufacture the lowers without a license.
There’s a lot more to all of these laws, but there’s no way the MSM would ever put anyone that knows them, can explain them in a clear & simple manner and provide proof. If they did, their whole narrative and agenda goes up in smoke.
I now find it amusing that not all muslims or illegal aliens are bad when one of them murders someone, but EVERY gun owner in the USA is Satan himself, when one fo these events happens.
“People who dont know anything about firearms will support it in droves.” Otherwise known as a lynch mob. Self defense comes to mind.
