The man shot and killed while trying to break up a fight that he noticed after his youth football teams game concluded was a beloved and respected coach who had an impact far beyond the field.
Police say 36-year-old Norzell Aldridge of Cheektowaga died at the hospital after a shooting just after 7 p.m. Saturday on Koons Avenue and Sycamore Street, on Buffalos east side.
A source close to the football organization tells News 4 Aldridge had been stepping in to protect young people during a fight when he was shot in the chest. The shooting happened not far from Emerson Park, where Aldridges team had just played the first game of their season.
Some of the leagues got together right away and said, we need to make sure people know this was a stand up guy who was really helping our young people, said Buffalo Common Council President Darius Pridgen.
Pridgen says many parents and community members have reached out to say what a great man Aldridge was.
He was one that a lot of parents would really depend on, especially single moms, to really help with their boys, Pridgen said, who said parents are working to line up counselors to help the boys.

Have you ever been to an urban youth football game?
It has the atmosphere of an illegal cockfight with gang-bangers and pit bulls.
Never insert yourself in an alpha male battle.
Koons Ave???
This is a sad and serious story, but I couldn’t help but notice the irony. Koons Avenue.
Some readers under 40 may not have noticed. That reference for black people is rarely used anymore, at least not in public.
Certain neighborhoods remain dangerous for anybody, due to a small group of folks who can’t handle anger or frustration without reaching for some sort of weapon.
Aldridge was coaching 9 and 10 year old boys playing their first game of the season. He was murdered while trying to break up a fight between teens who had nothing to do with the game.
Life is cheap in the 'hood. Sad story.
Any true coach’s DNA will send him into any situation to help his kids.
What about the perp? That’s the real question.
Gee, Prince Andrew, Hows that Safe Act working out for you? Gonna spend another $Billion on Buffalo?
Before they even try to get guns from honorable citizens.. they had better do something with these stupid and death seeking, hate filled youth, who are allowed to walk the streets in numbers and fight at will.. and law doing nothing. It could have been stopped, slowed if they had done something with these youths when they strutted and ganged up as a sign of their stupidity ... they have no right to be on the streets...
you lefties... take them in and stop the carnage... you let this get out of hand.. way out of hand.. and you want to use it to get the guns we rightfully have for protection against you and what you have planned ... if given a chance.
Black lives matter to everybody except Black Lives Matter.
Young people don’t have a childhood anymore. #1 They have been raised without Jesus, #2 The God-fearing grandmothers of yesteryear are almost non-existent, #3 Punishment never fits the crime, #4 Follow them home and see what’s behind the door, #5 No respect for life or for that matter themselves, #6 They have seen it all on social media/movies, #7 They have been sold a bill of goods by the education system, etc. etc. etc.
Here, at a local gas station, a youth football team was raising money for new uniforms and most of the team are blacks, with Hispanics, Whites and Asians. The team always say Thank You.
Guess he should have won more games.
Yeah, he was a wonderful guy, but we won’t help the cops find his murderer.
Never forgot the one student (many years ago) in my college class who was knifed to death trying to break up a fight one night on campus.
He was a nice, well-liked guy who never saw that coming. :-(
