Turkey's Syria invasion: Member of US Special Forces says, 'I am ashamed for the first time in my career'

A member of U.S. Special Forces serving alongside the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria told Fox News' Jennifer Griffin on Wednesday they were witnessing Turkish atrocities on the frontlines.

“I am ashamed for the first time in my career,” said the distraught soldier, who has been involved in the training of indigenous forces on multiple continents. The service member, whom Griffin described as "hardened," is among the 1,000 or so U.S. troops who remain in Syria.

“Turkey is not doing what it agreed to. It’s horrible,” this military source on the ground told Griffin. “We met every single security agreement. The Kurds met every single agreement [with the Turks]. There was no threat to the Turks -- none -- from this side of the border."

Calling an ethnic group with no sovereign government "allies" is the height of idiocy when it comes to foreign policy.

I can only imagine what the threads would look like here on FR if the Chinese government started establishing diplomatic and military ties with La Raza or Black Lives Matter.

The only ones you can complain about if your issue is timing are the military whiners who wouldn't comply with a pullout order the first time said to pull out of the damn country we shouldn't have been in in the first place.

Or a month or more ago when Trump told the military to pull the troops out and they screamed that they needed time to set up the pullout, Trump was a Pu$$y then, too, right?

Move to Tel Aviv and cry with Kolomoysky over Syria and Ukraine not falling into the lap of the corrupt Neocon scum or deal with the fact that Trump is keeping his word and pulling the US out of senseless wars.

We have to stop getting involved in wars we have no intention to win. If you are not in a war to win it then you have no business to be in that war!

Also, we keep using the term curds. Like it’s a monolithic group. One bunch of curds is a communist terrorist group according to our own state department. Another group is reasonably friendly towards us. Turkey has hundreds of thousands of rebel refugees that need to get dumped somewhere. Turkeys options are return them to Syria, keep them or dump them in the EU.

But Turkey did bring this on themselves by buying ISIS oil, shooting to Russian jets fighting the rebels, and by being part of the CIA/State group that launched the while Syrian civil war.

The best thing the Kurds could do is make peace with Assad and be Syrian again.

When I first heard it, it really didn’t smell right. I could be wrong, but I think this was a fabricated source and not one of our finest. Just my gut feeling.

Turkey's Syria invasion: Member of US Special Forces says ...

That's an interesting headline.

I must have missed the Fox News report years ago that started: "America's Syria invasion ... (etc.)"

You didn’t complain when people voiced opinions against and undermined the usurpers policy, did you? Geez, land of the free and all.

Look, the Kurds were good fighters before we arrived. They’ve had years of training by the best troops in USA. If they can’t hold there own, then it becomes our fight? First, just kill all the ISIS guys in prisons. Don’t let them out to kill more people. Syria is a wasteland. Why should we care.

"..no one should be able to criticize, say, teachers unless you are quite prepared to drop everything and then become a teacher."

Logically, there is no comparing of soldiers to teachers.

Anyone can pull a trigger.

“That ‘soldier’ is no better than Tokyo Rose. He should shut his mouth. You got suckered into helping him demoralize people.”

Good call.

Pay no attention to the knee-jerk Special Forces defenders here who really, REALLY want to believe THIS Big Media article.

“...Not everyone on Fox News...”

Just about everyone! Bret Baier’s panel tonight was so anti Trump that I thought I was watching CNN. I almost never put him on and now I have reminded myself the reason that I don’t.

I think that there is something more to this story that we don’t know about yet. We shall see.

Alright, you have raised a legitimate concern.

I want excised from the Middle East. None of the conflicts we are involved in should still be occurring and one of them (Gulf War 2) never should have happened at all. We should have put all parties on notice that we are winding down. ISIS fighters should be sentenced and imprisoned by Iraq and Syria for invading and taking those nations’ territory. Death sentences should be handed out like candy to them. We should have warned the Kurds that we cannot help them fight to carve out territory either. We then should have given a firm date on the start of withdrawal.

I don’t feel good about “leaving people to be slaughtered” if that is indeed what is happening. We truly don’t know as of yet. If it had been me making the decisions, I would be going around to the UN and talking to the countries involved about what is going on and what their plans are. I would get a definite plan from Turkey and I would have arranged my withdrawal around that plan. I would have even helped evacuate the Kurds further from the area if needed as I started to leave.

At no point should the Kurds have been promised anything regarding their ethnic struggle or their cause. At no point should they alone have been left “guarding” the ISIS fighters.

I would have left Turkey with a FIRM warning about any atrocities they might want to inflict. Discussion about their suspension or eviction from NATO, suspension of any U.S. aid, diplomatic activity at the UN, and if needed, help the Kurds push them back across the border into Turkey if they launch a slaughter against anyone other than terrorists.

I think I am being more than fair in a situation we can do little about. What say you?

I am ashamed.

They showed Kurdish women, children fleeing their homes to avoid being killed by Turkish forces. Is this how we treat our front-line allies who sacrificed many lives to bring down ISIS?

Trump's biggest blunder. This will be a sop of sorts if he loses in 2020!

You keep calling this guy one of our finest fighting soldiers. Look at post 40. From a real Special Forces soldier. He’s calling BS on this report. And you should too.

That ethnic group as you call it is holding about 20,000 ISIS fighters for us. Once again, like obama pulling out of Iraq, we risk losing all the gains fought for and bled for in defeating the caliphate. Give this 6 months or a year, and you and I can look at the aftermath that this creates and decide if my concern here is idiocy. Where will those 20,000 ISIS fighters be?

I agree. Trump wouldn’t pull troops just to pull troops. What if this was a warning for the Kurds to get moving and the Turkish AF is going to bomb the ISIS prisoners.

End this chapter of history once and for all.
