Tesla Model S doors wouldn't unlock as driver burned to death inside...

A doctor in Florida burned to death because the battery in his Tesla burst into flames and the car's futuristic door handles wouldn't allow a police officer to rescue him, according to a legal complaint.

Dr Omar Awan died in February after his Tesla hit a palm tree.

...part of the design of the Tesla Model S is to retract the door handles into the car and they then "auto-present" and pop out when the car's key fob is detected nearby.

However, the handles malfunctioned and people were not able to open the doors

Dr Awan had no broken bones or other injuries resulting from the crash.

My car doesn’t have the flammable battery of a Tesla.

Wow. Thanks for the info.

During the time all in the car are in a total panic I have to calmly try to see if my ignition key will turn on the system to get the window motors to work.

Maybe like Planes, Trains and Automobiles as the car submerges I can say the John Candy line after the car burned —”One thing, the radio still works fine.”

“You sir are an old fool.”

Actually, closer to middle-aged. But no, I’m not a fool, I didn’t take Musk’s bait.

This is stupid. The handle on the inside works just like all other handles - pull it and the door opens. If it would not open from the inside the it probably would not open from the outside even if their was a handle to pull on.
And IIRC LEO’s carry a window shattering thingy that breaks the window when pushed against the glass and will also cut the seat belt to get you out. Basic lifesaving tools.

It is something that cannot be described.

My father - an Engineer, lifelong car enthusiast and man of few words who raced Super Street in the 80’s and 90’s(drag racing) said “this changes everything” when given a ride.

Who is going to use a loaded plastic gun butt as a hammer? EVERYONE carries a Glock. Or, you can fiddle with popping the mag, racking the slide, and THEN scarring up the butt...

I think it does. It acts just like any regular door handle.

In a moment you go from things are great to the crap pile. I don’t know how I’d react or if I’d do it right but if you’re wrong you won’t get another shot at it. Ain’t none of us walking out of this life, we all are just trying to go as far as we can. Having a key and remembering to use it under stress is tough. Panic is what kills most often in scuba accidents. Quit thinking and drown.

“My Tesla is my daily driver. What the hell are you talking about?”

Lots of forums for people who need to justify their mistake in buying one of these. But, as you can see here from most of the comments, this is not one of them.

You ignition will still be on. If the crash didn’t destroy the battery or short out the system the window motors will still have power.

Explain your “called to account” comment. You’re either 12 years old, or you’re old enough to know better than to act the way you are.

“My car doesn’t have the flammable battery of a Tesla.”

ROTFLMAO! You are carrying gallons of a flammable liquid that has the potential to explode with results unmatched by thevTesla battery!

You are driving a deathtrap!

“Looks like those Tesla-bashers got their comeuppance today.”

I know right?

Posting this again... FELLOW CONSERVATIVES - Whats not to like?

*Made in USA with a respectable US made content. My brother in laws company makes the review mirrors.
*Non - Union
*Probably a net exporter - Europe and Asia are eating em up.
*Leading the next tech revolution over stolen/subsidized Chinese crap. The Chinese would LOVE to dominate in this area.
*Wake to a full tank every morning(for me about 250 miles of real world fun, lead foot miles)
*Batteries that should last 300,000 to 500,000 still giving 70-80% of original charge near end of life.
*Wiper blades and tires only regular maintenance.

Downsides.
*Mechanic careers - I feel for that personally with friends in this field.
*Made in California.
*Neck hurts though - a lot.
*Breitbart doesn’t like Elon.

I also own a 16 mpg Atlas SUV. it’s not a green argument for me.

My folding knife has a hardpoint built in that is designed to break tempered auto glass. It has a seatbelt cutter too. $25 on Amazon.

"FALSE"

Correct. There's more to the story that's still being investigated.

You are supposed to be able to unlock it manually BUT some other failure prevented that. Side note, there is NO way to open rear doors from the inside manually on model 3.

You'll find this article below a bit better. Highlight: "When an airbag inflates, Model S unlocks all doors, the trunk, and extends all door handles." - which didn't happen here.
