Lincoln Chafee files to run for president as a libertarian

Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee has filed to run for President as a libertarian in what appears to be a new long-shot White House bid following his failed campaign for the Democratic nomination in 2016.

Chafee filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Sunday to form the Lincoln Chafee for President campaign committee based in Wyoming. A website linked to Chafee's FEC filing states "Lincoln Leads with TRUTH" along with the phrase "Thirty Years, Zero Scandals." Chafee has spent most of his life as a Republican. He was nominated to his late father's Senate seat in 1999 and then was elected as a Republican in 2000. He served only one term, losing to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse in 2006, but then successfully ran for governor of Rhode Island as an independent. His 2016 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, however, was marked by anemic poll and fundraising numbers.

OMG he is worse than Johnson...

Truth... I never understood the appeal of Gary. Yeah, he muddled about a bit and did ok in New Mexico, but ran as a pro-dope/anti-2A semi-Socialist. He was a horrible standard bearer.

Admittedly, I don't know that much about Chafee beyond his name cropping up every now and then from his blatant opportunism...

Because he is hearing the voice of the people calling his name.

He has about as much chance as Rhode Island becoming as big as Texas.

We have counties that are bigger than R.I. Lol!

“in what appears to be a new long-shot”

hey, CNN, what part of that action “appears”? appears that it’s new? appears that it’s a long-shot? because to me, both are self-evident without the squish qualifier “appears”, but i understand, you squished it because you really meant “hopefully” instead of “appears”, but you didn’t have the cojones to be that obvious ...

“Libertarians should be rounded up and put into camps.”

probably only one very small camp would be needed ...

“Hey, Old Linc’s big thing last time was the Metric System. Just what we need!”

yeah, i can just see the debates:

Trump: “Keep America Great!”

Dems: “Make America Socialist Again!” (1st time was the Pilgrims)

Chafee: “Make America Metric!”

Those jackasses [Libertarians] have cost us way too many key races.

How many? Examples?

Shouldn’t you be FOR SMALL GOVERNMENT to be libertarian?? Another reason Libertarians are kooks!!

He filed to run as a libertarian. Nothing in the article says any Libertarian encouraged him.

Well, he was in congress for a number of years. He should be able to point to a big pile of ‘libertarian’ bills he sponsored.

Johnson saved our butt in 2016 by running as the marijuana candidate. Chafee is as much a libertarian as Elizabeth Warren is a libertarian pureblood Cherokee.

Either that, or he’s looking to beef up his legacy on his Wikipedia page.

If he has a page. I haven’t even looked yet...

Take a look at Gary Johnson’s vote, state by state, Then at his pro-drug, no mention of 2A politics. Then at Trump’s margin of victory. We need Gary Johnson or similar to run as a Libertarian. Unfortunately, Lincoln Chafee isn’t the person. Maybe Ronan Farrow.

4,489,235 votes for Gary Johnson 2016 Presidential run. Now think how many more states Hilliary would have carried with 4,489,235 * 75% more votes. And how few of these votes President Trump is going to get.
I don’t know a single Libertarian candidate who is likely to draw more than 2 million votes in 2020. We need a strong left Libertarian candidate and a strong Green candidate to maximize chances. Problem with that is downstream races, as a strong Green candidate is likely to help Dims downballot.

Just the other day I was talking with someone who was pretty convinced that Johnson took more votes away from Trump. Their theory was that if Johnson hadn’t been in the race, Trump might have edged out Hillary in the popular vote. I disagreed, saying that the Libertarian party leans left these days (unlike, say, twenty years ago in the Harry Browne era). They countered that Johnson was a Republican and would have gotten the anti-Trump Republican and conservative vote. At that point I was at a bit of a loss because I wasn’t familiar with Johnson and wasn’t sure who he would appeal to (or be able to fake out). You’re saying he would have gotten more lefty votes?
