Patrick Stewart: New Star Trek Show a ‘Response to Brexit and Trump’

Patrick Stewart returns to Star Trek and the role of Jean-Luc Picard in a new CBS streaming show, but the reason it exists at all is, unsurprisingly, political. The liberal actor told Variety this week that Picard is “me responding to the world of Brexit and Trump.” He also said that the United States (under Trump) and Britain (under Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson) are “completely f****d.”

Talking to Variety’s Daniel Holloway, Stewart explained why his character is getting a revival:

Trump seemed to be responsible for a lot of old TV shows coming back. In 2018, the creator of the '80s/'90s sitcom Murphy Brown explained why that show returned: “We definitely wouldn't have had the show” if Trump hadn’t won. She added, “We didn't have a motivation do it. We didn't really have the meat or a story. And then when the election happened, I mean, if Hillary had won, we would just be dancing in the streets.”

Stewart connected the United States, Britain, Brexit, Trump and Johnson into one political lament:

“I’m not sure which one of us is in the most trouble,” he says of Britain and the United States. “I think it’s actually the U.K. I think we’re f—ed, completely f—ed.” He points to studies predicting decades-long economic damage inflicted by the country’s looming withdrawal from the European Union. Of the U.S., he says, “There is a time limit to your f—ed state, which is four years away.” He expresses hope that “the United States that has given us the Trump administration” can change...

But, the actor added, “He will likely get reelected..”

In November of 2019, Stewart told a French audience that he’s “embarrassed” by Brexit and thinks it’s a “disgrace.”

I'd be happy to write the pilot. The plot outline is obvious: the Federation has been absorbed by the Borg. Here and there, a few planets are trying to break away. Picard is a commander in a Borg swat team with a mission of subduing or eradicating the dissidents.

Political commentary woven into television shows is not always a bad thing. Sometimes a reasonable point can be made. But making an entire series or show around one’s own bitter prejudices makes for a very sad commentary on those involved rather than any useful commentary on the politics of our time.

“Star Trek for women”

Yep. They added an officer to the ship just to have a “Ship’s Counselor” who had super-empathy to detect feelings. Then they gave her a seat on the bridge right next to the Captain. That’s some cucked up **** right there.

Thanks for the heads up on what not to watch. Hollyweirds just can’t help but signal “virtue”, even at the expense of hurting their business.

I’ll have to take your word for it, as I watched maybe 2 or 3 episodes and found it boring. Besides that I though the captain was a wimp in comparison to Kirk. 8>)

This is the guy that blamed the fans for not understanding his awesome work on Star Trek Nemesis! The movie that killed the TNG movie franchise

Once again, an actor reveals the truth about entertainment: it is produced primarily to promote an agenda, not to entertain.

The plot and story line are designed to pull you into the drama, and to turn off your criticial thinking. Then, while you are in a happy state of suspension of disbelief, they slip the message into your head, knowing it will bypass the censor.

Not with me! I’m wise to their tricks! I can still watch one of their propaganda pieces and it won’t affect me. That’s why I can watch the Big Bang Theory and laugh, ignoring the promotion of homosexuality, the demeaning of normal men as insecure wimps, and the trashing of Christianity.

Why are so many people who are overpaid to play pretend so politically dense?

If the socialists take over, their “usefulness” is gone as is their cushy lifestyle.

“I’m not sure which one of us is in the most trouble,” he says of Britain and the United States. “I think it’s actually the U.K. I think we’re f—ed, completely f—ed.”

Now that is some deep and thought-provoking political analysis.

Never cared for Star Trek 2 or whatever it was referred to.

Me neither. Star Trek: The Next Generation... all they did was go to the holodeck.

And the problem with Brexit is what, exactly?

Seems no one wants to - or is capable of - explaining that.

I never, ever, EVER liked this guy going back to the first episode of the first season of Star Trek TNG. That was long before I knew anything about his politics. He was just never appealing.
