CDC: 32 Million Americans Ill With Flu This Season, 18,000 Deaths

Although the media are focused on the coronavirus and the two fatalities that have taken place in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), influenza and related pneumonia are widespread across the country.

“CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 32 million flu illnesses, 310,000 hospitalizations and 18,000 deaths from flu,” the CDC’s weekly Influenza Surveillance Report said as of February 22, 2020.

“The percentage of death attributed to pneumonia and influenza is 6.9 percent, below the epidemic threshold of 7.3 percent,” the CDC reported.

Among the deaths are more than 100 children.

“Twenty influenza-associated pediatric deaths occurring during the 2019-2020 season were reported this week,” the CDC reported. “The total for the season is 125.”

“This number [of pediatric deaths] is higher for the same time period than in every season since reporting began in 2004-05, except for the 2009 pandemic,” the CDC reported.

But overall, flu activity was down, according to the CDC.

“Key indicators that track flu activity remain high but decreased for the second week in a row,” the CDC reported. “Severity indicators (hospitalizations and deaths) remain moderate to low overall, but hospitalization rates differ by age group, with high rates among children and young adults.”

The CDC also released information on the effectiveness of this year’s vaccines.

“Interim estimates of 2019-2020 flu vaccine effectiveness were released last week,” the CDC reported. “So far this season, flu vaccines are reducing doctor’s visits for flu illness by 45 percent overall and 55 percent in children.”

Because the vaccine which has been around for a long time, is totally worthless..My nephew had the shot, got Influenza B(At least that is what the doc said) in December, had 105 fever for 1 week with no other symptoms before he recovered

That’s 50 deaths a day. Keep that in mind when every corona bug death is breathlessly reported.

Could we PLEASE stop with the “it’s no worse than the flu” (or, worse, the flu is WAY worse!) nonsense?

Go read this and get back with us..

IMHO, unless we get very, very lucky, this could wind up being north of Spanish Flu of 1918 bad in terms of number sick and dead globally. Sure hope I’m wrong, but I’ve been following this very closely and it is BAD.

The next couple of weeks will tell one way or the other..

And yet people are not staying away from sports events or Disney World or political rallies....for example....due to that truly deadly flu.

People are not stocking up on food and water supplies due to that truly deadly flu.

So who is the “Us” you speak of???

Couple that with the massive Hyperbolic link you post it is pretty clear you are sold out to the MSM line

Look forward to understanding who the “Us” is you mention

I suspect it is at the very least a cadre that has been very busy of late here on FR, especially since this broke

Reminds me of the 4 AM memo that goes out to all the news “sources” daily telling them what to say

Since Christmas, I’ve caught flu twice from my grandson. First was influenza B and then 4 weeks later influenza A. I got my flu shot in October, so that was a waste.
If he brings home corona, I suppose I’ll get that too.

Spring break hotel and car rental rates are through the roof in Orlando. Who is staying away from Disney? Obviously, nobody.

Humans have adapted to the flu and how to treat it is known. Researchers are just beginning to understand the Corona virus. That is not a big difference, it is a huge one.

So, of 32 million ill, only 0.05625% died. In the US there are currently 102 ill and 6 dead for a mortality rate of 5.9%. No matter how you look at it, that is a big difference.

If we extrapolate, for simplicity, assume 320 million people, that would be 180,000 dead if all Americans got the flu. By comparison, if the same 320 million got Chinese Coronavirus, that would be nearly 18.9 million dead Americans.

Do the math yourself before you dismiss this.

Another sobering fact. Of the 102 sick, only 7 have recoverd. So 89 are still sick.

Despite a weird flu season, this year’s flu shot is working relatively well to prevent influenza, particularly among children, according to a new report.

In the new report, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated the flu shot’s effectiveness in more than 4,000 U.S. children and adults who visited the doctor for respiratory illness between Oct. 23, 2019, and Jan. 25, 2020.

Overall, the vaccine was 45% effective, meaning it reduced the risk of a doctor’s visit for flu by 45%, the report found. The vaccine worked even better in children, reducing their risk of a doctor’s visit for flu by 55%.

Flu shots are generally 40 to 60% effective when the flu strains circulating match the strains in the vaccine, and this year’s estimates fall within that range, the authors said.
