'I know, but what do you want me to do?': Fauci's strikingly honest review of Trump's coronavirus response
thehour.com ^ | 3/23/20 | Aaron Blake

Posted on 03/24/2020 1:56:17 AM PDT by a little elbow grease

Dr. Anthony Fauci's interview with Science magazine began on an inauspicious note. Asked how he's doing right now, Fauci said he was "exhausted" but "good." "I mean, I'm not, to my knowledge, coronavirus-infected," he said, before adding with a laugh: "To my knowledge, I haven't been fired."

What followed were several exchanges that should help people take stock of President Donald Trump's response to the coronavirus. Repeatedly, Fauci tacitly and even openly admitted that comments made by the commander in chief are not true and are not in line with what the nation's leading infectious disease expert is advising.

The interviewer, Jon Cohen, asked whether Fauci would acknowledge that Trump says things he disagrees with, and Fauci seemed to grant the premise. Fauci maintained that, "I don't disagree on the substance" - but then added: "It is expressed in a way that I would not express it, because it could lead to some misunderstanding about what the facts are about a given subject."

The exchange highlights the mixed messages the country has been getting in recent days, in particular, about the promise of certain drugs to treat coronavirus. While Fauci has warned that evidence of the drugs' effectiveness is "anecdotal" and that there is no "magic drug" to treat coronavirus, Trump said Friday that he "disagreed" with Fauci, at least in part, and has repeatedly hailed a malaria drug in particular as a possible "game-changer."

Asked about the White House holding crowded events like a Rose Garden news conference in which Trump was shaking hands with people, Fauci admitted he has repeatedly advised against it. "I keep saying, is there any way we can get a virtual news conference. Thus far, no," Fauci said. "I'm trying my best. I cannot do the impossible."

Fauci properly persists in using precise doctortalk. PotUS uses everyday ‘mercan. Different dialects of English.

Doctortalk versus 'mercan!

In the medical world, they always stress bringing information to the patient in a way they can easily understand. 'Mercan works!

Don't inject fishtank cleaner!

“Fauci speaks to facts. Trump speaks to hope.”

That’s the same line of claptrap — verbatim, IIRC — that Fauci said in one of his interviews — maybe the one with Mark Levin.

Fauci doesn’t speak to facts; he doesn’t have actual facts about this virus. He speaks to certain protocols that he’s familiar with in his line of work, like a robot.

Trump doesn’t doesn’t speak to hope. He speaks to information he has collected and weighed, and where excellent results actually have been recorded. “Hope” sounds pathetic, un-serious, and silly — like a little girl with HOPE that Bubba will invite her to the prom. Trumps speaks to more than hope.

Fauci’s line was vapid and disingenuous.

“Apparently he wasn’t right on HIV and any number of other imminent disasters throughout his 500 years in office.”

Really. Reading about him online shows a litany of failures when it comes to medicine, HIV being one. He is, however, an effective politician.

Fauci is a doctor, Trump is not...no slam on the President, just a fact. They look at things differently. Doctors use science and statistics, Trump uses his gut and experience. That doesn’t mean either are wrong, that’s their respective frames of reference. Fauci is trying to keep people from getting sick, Trump is trying to balance the health of the people and the health of the country. I actually like the fact Trump doesn’t just look for “yes” people but people with differing views creating internal conflict in the WH team. I do not support undermining...and anyone on the team that does that needs to go.

My husband is an engineer, but he also knows how to talk to people. He’s the kind of guy that companies put in front of customers to help explain why one method of doing something works better than another.

For doctors, the comparable equivalent is having a nice bedside manner. People need someone who can explain things and reassure them that whatever treatment you’re about to get is the right one.

Fauci doesn’t do that.

“Fauci has been rightfully put in the back row for his publicly criticizind his boss. He had ample opportunity to have his say with Trump and yet because he didn’t get his way his career in government is all but finished.”

I think you may be right. Fauci is creating a divide, possibly out of spite; that, or he’s just to myopic that he doesn’t see anything but what he is narrowly focused upon. Trump will keep him around (for now) for his input, but only as one among many; then, Trump will consider all positions then act upon that which he thinks is best for the country (which is his duty as president).

“I guess Fauci never served in any armed force.”

I believe you are correct. He told someone (Mark Levin?) he went directly from college to the organization where he is now.

Why is this rat being allowed to so publicly undermine the President? On the same damn stage. The optics are terrible and whoever continues to allow this should be fired immediately.

I do agree, if only because the little weasel stands there making peculiar faces when The President is making various points. He is a no good little sleaze.

“I don’t trust Dr, Birx much either after watching the Amazing Polly podcast!”

I don’t recognize the podcast, but I do recall her saying a couple of weeks ago something about chloroquine — whether it works or not. She said exactly what The Troll said, i.e., that just because it works in a test tube doesn’t mean it will be effective for humans. She has said that The Troll is her “mentor”.

It made me cringe a little. After that, though, she seems to have her tune, or toned it down some. I like that her head is full of statistics and hard science knowledge, and less like self-promoting Troll who is full of bafflegab. He blathers about procedures; she provides facts.

Bottom line: They’re all politicians. I like her better each day.
